Olsongo,

Saludos hermano!!!

Yes, I believe you are referring to the barril de torniquete. (See attached pic).

Oslongo,

Glad yours sound decent to you. I've managed to alter my playing techniques to coax some decent drum sounds out of them... but I think if the drums will take thicker skins without breaking, then they will shine better then.
I didn't inspect all three drums in my set for bolts between staves, but I think I did see one on one of mine. I hope this won't be a big problem when I try to mount thicker skins.
And yes, you may want to get a thicker rim ring made before mounting a thicker skin. I think I started to see one of mine bow slightly when I tried cranking it up.
I have MUCH going on at present, so it could take me a while to get the thicker skins. You may beat me to the punch, so post your findings here if you get that far.

Tamboricua,

I would absolutely love to own some of those Junior's!!! That looks like a killer drum.

Do you know how many sizes/versions he may have produced on bomba's?

What exactly does it say on that nameplate? I'm not sure if all the wording is visible in the photo...

People, Papo at timbas del valle can make those Bomba drums with lugs or the torniquete style. I seen his work and he is a pro. I have taken my Bongos to him to replace the skins or to make a set of crowns,he always do an excellent job. If any body wants his phone or address let me know.

The name plate reads JP Junior Percussion Brooklyn, N.Y.

Regarding how to get a hold on some "Juniors" drums best bet is to be on the look out at E-bay.

Looks like the price for these South America Conga Company" Bomba Conga Drums shot through the roof.

It's more like they stopped offering them at auction because they sold 3 or 4 sets on eBay real cheap. They were probably losing money, and so now they are offering at a price that will allow them to profit. But I doubt they'll sell many (if any) at the current asking price. My guess is that there won't be more than 5 or 6 sets out there 5 years from now. Even though they are as I described them, I'm really glad I got them for my percussion arsenal.

I should mention: I tried striking one with a pair of toilet plunger handles and it's skin kept relatively loose, and I got quite a good, booming sound out of it. Even with the drum sitting on the floor with the mouth closed off. I'll probably use that sound in some music somewhere, but I hope I don't split the thin skin. Still waiting to hear if mule skins can be mounted on these without damaging the drum shell or hardware.

WBB , I got a set at a very very low cost, I am going to replace the skin with something... the thicker the better, also am reinforcing the rim with 1/8" bar from HD , and at the bottom opening I am placing a metal strap.
Will keep you posted.
