I notice a lot of people on the board own other Moperc models, but I am looking for some feedback on their Custom Cubano Series.
They have the coveted shape I am looking for, but I am wondering if anyone can chime in with some first-hand experience. I think they are beautiful. Thanks.
OZ has a set. He should be able to help you out. Being in NY is good on you, since Michel(Moperc) is just north of Vermont, and shipping could be minimal. Heck you can probably evem drive up there.
I love the belly shape also, I tested Michels' workmanship by getting a set of bongos. The cubano is mainly in Maple wood.Though Michel will do a Custom Custom in ash if wanted. One thing though , his shells are heavy. Even the bongos are heavy. But the craftmanship is top notch. I would guess by the bongos that the congas would have a old school dryness on the open tones. The slaps should be outrageous. To note the bearing edge is very round , and the highest point is centered of the staves. Unlike many other mfg's he does not taper the edge. His turn around is rather quick, due to the stock of shells he has set up and waiting.
I am definitely keeping that in mind. These are still used drums, no matter how good the seller says they are. If you are far away and cannot look at them, there is no telling what they've been through.
The seller probably made a profit, considering they were made 7 yrs ago....and he's the second owner.
In THIS case, I'd rather pay the extra couple hundred bucks, have brand spankin new drums made the way I want em, and drive a few hours north to meet Michel myself.
Not trying to threadjack, this is the most current thread on Moperc's. I also posted in the video thread, but things get buried there...
I stumbled across this video of Los Munequitos, mostly dancing, but what I was looking for were Moperc drums, Moperc sponsors Los Munequitos and in this video they are playing his congas...
The Salsa Club Series Congas is what they are playing, you can see the unusual sideplates and the yellow color, they sound pretty good, and hey if Los Munequitos are playing them they can't be bad!
Thanks for finding that BNB. Yeah those sideplates are similar to Meinl floatunes, but I surmise Moperc style is hot and innovative. And the sound, sounds freekin good man, listen to that quinto.
