I'm interested in listening to/absorbing as much as I can in the way of traditional percussion rhythms. Are there albums of just percussion, or at least mostly percussion (preferably Afro-cuban percussion with congas or African percussion with djembes but I'm open to most anything), showcasing such traditional rhythms. For example, guaguanco, or anything along the same vein -- think tribal-sounding rhythms. Anything with chanting/vocals is acceptable, but I'd prefer not to have melodic instruments if possible.

Light Seeker,

Below is my recommendation.

In that single CD you will have excellent examples of:

Guiro
Bembé
Iyesá
Arará
Palo
Brikamo
Abakuá
Yambú Matancero
Guaguancó
Columbia
Batá
Batarumba

Hope this helps...

Best,

Jorge Ginorio

right on the nail Jorge...I have listened to this cd countless times, not only for entertainment but for musical instruction as well...i play along from track to track....if i may add

Yoruba:
Conjunto Folklorico Nacional- Musica Yoruba Volume 1 (great recording, clear, and a young Lazaro Ros, tearing it up)

Rumba:
Anything by Los Muñequitos, although I tend to steer to the early Goyo days..."Yambu, Guaguanco, Columba" is a good one.
Yoruba Andabo- "Cajones Bullangueros" (if you can get a copy)
Clave Y Guaguanco- " Songs and Dances" as well they are scarce, but anything by these groups are worth getting....
A good recording to mention is "La Rumba es Cubana- Su Historia" by Gregorio Hernandez "El Goyo"...he runs the gamut from coros de clave to guarapachangeo...
