4TH Conga????????

Im , Considering buying a additional 4 th conga to my 11" ,11 3/4",12 1/2" set up .
Im thinking of maybe another Conga 11 3/4", possibly a 13 1/4 supertumba .
My question is which way would you go any why ?

I'd been mulling over the additional drum to my quinto, conga, tumba setup. I wanted to do so to add another melodic element. I was focused on another conga, rather than a tumba or super tumba. I think the conga would give me more tuning flexibility within the three drum sequence, and it's a lighter tub to move around than the supertumba. I'm able to tune my mule-headed tumba down sufficiently to give me a solid bass note. My recommendation would be an additional conga.

Super T for the those low leads on Bembe, Makuta, Palo, and any bomba note that you'd like to stand out in the low frequency range.

Marco, at the end of the day it´s also a question of tuning, so IMO you don´t necessarily need a supertumba unless you´re after the styles windhorse mentions.
I own two 11" quintos and two 11 3/4" Congas and I´m perfectly happy with the tones I can get out of them. I can tune them to a Latin Jazz tuning, e.g. (from low to high) F - G - Bb - C or D, depending on the situation. A different range is of course also possible without losing decent open tones. I know, some forum members get the heebies if someone has got not tumba, but it´s quite OK for me :p

Furthermore, bigger drums are sometimes more expensive...

It´s also a question which brand you choose:
Some brands have thicker skins than others with their congas, I would consider this as well. BTW my LP Classic quinto which had a (tto) thin factory head has got a very thick cowhide now, so it really SOUNDS like a conga in my four-drum setup.
If I remember correctly, you have got some nice Meinls, havent´you? As they use very thin heads these days, I´d not recommend using one as your lowest drum - or you reskin it, which leads to financial trouble and/or nervous breakdown (like you and also me had with those nasty muleys) :;):

And Mike I had made my mind up to add another 113/4 comnga , but I needed alternative opinions . Windhorse thanks . maybe the super tumba will come later .

So which brand are you looking for?

Yet another thought: I wouldn´t spend too much money on the fourth drum, it can be a sencond-hand one. Perhaps there´s something at ebay. I heard that Schallochs are quite a good deal (not to sure about the sizes though).

The seller made a mistake and posted and posted a Djembe Photo, but it´s really a 12" Schalloch conga that is for sale.

Well, after all, the Meinl classics are fine drums!
