Good morning everyone. I would love to hear some recomendations for some Tata recordings. I don't own any and have only heard some youtube stuff which is ok but, not enough.

Thanks
Luis

Pasaporte with Tata Gunes and Miguel Anga Diaz, kind of hard to find though.

Luis,

Tata's work on Cachao y su Ritmo Caliente recorded back in 1957 still among his best material available.

Hope this helps!!!

Best...

Jorge Ginorio

Luis,
I definitely agree with Tamboricua's recommendation. This whole album is a smoker! My favorite tune on this one is Descarga Cubana. I still practice to it.

The record that Jorge mentioned is in my opinion indeed the book for rhythm section work, particularly percussion. It was called "Cuban Jam Sessions in Miniature - 'Descargas'" when it came out on the Panart Vinyl.

Not as central as this one, you might also want to look for a CD containing the material of the original LP "Estos son los Amigos" by Frank Emilio Flynn y sus Amigos. Look at the pictures at: http://page7.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/g53662241

Also, for typical unaccompanied solos by Tata, check out the intro of "Fiesta de Tambores" on "Intercambio Cultural" by Tipica 73. Another Tata solo can be found on an LP called "Havanna Jam", a live album featuring various artists including Los Papines, Jaco Pastorius and others.

Greetings,

Thomas

Jorge ! Once again...right on time....This recording is a milestone, not only reveered by percussionists, but my most latin/jazz instrumentalists....Tata has influenced so many congueros...too many...and this is the recording that showcased his mastery to the world....a percussionist who does not have this recording in his collection...is sleeping, big time...

p.s. I also like his hard to find CD, "Aniversario"...

Tata is maestro de maestros.

There is also a 2nd PASAPORTE cd. Quite rare.

Enjoy this clip, it shows my 2 biggest mentors and influences

Anga, and Tata. This footage is promo from Pasaporte recording.

Yo Abakua,
That video is "the bomb"! Thank you for posting this. I must have watched it about 30 times already, lol. Wish there were more footage like this available on DVDs from these masters of tambores.

Ralph,
It's so funny cuz I was looking for Aniversario by Tata Guines for a while and finally found it on Amazon.com, I just placed the order about an hour ago. I also purchased a CD titled, Guaguanco Con Carlos "Patato" Valdez with Orlando Contreras. Does anyone here on the forum have this album by Patato? Can't wait for Aniversario to come in. I understand its chock full of nuts with conga solos and rumba by Tata.

An essential album imo featuring Tata is the Nino Rivera & Julio Gutierrez - Las Legendarias Jam Sessions, amazing 10 + minutes discargas that include the incredible 'Yeyito' on Bongo as well, Tata and Yeyito in the same rhythm section, what more could you ask for ?

IT WONT HURT TO PICK THESE UP WHILE YOU'RE LOOKING FOR TATA MATERIAL'
THE GUAGUANCO ALBUM BY ORLANDO CONTRERAS IS A CLASSIC SINCE HE WAS A BOLERO MAN AND THE FACT THAT THE PERCUSSION IS LED BY PATATO AND CORTIJO.
