Evans heads

I apologize if this has been posted already but a search turned up nothing.

I never paid much attention to the synthetic heads available as none were made to fit my Toca Traditionals. Now, however, I see where Evans is making their Dot synthetic conga head to fit the Traditionals.

I would appreciate any feedback on these from those who have used them.

I haven't tried them for congas, I'm not a synthetic fan, but did try an evans head on a bongo macho once, didn't work for me, it sounded exactly like I suppose I should have expected it to sound... Like plastic ! I'm sure there are great applications for the synth heads and people like Raul Rekow make them sound great but not for me.

Evan are not the best synthetic heads on the market, Remo Nuskyns or Fyberskyns are better if you really want to use synthetics. I tried Evans and found them a bit raucous and not very pleasant to my ear, they do have the volume set at eleven, however, but no subtility. You will get more pleasant sounds from the Remos.

as Diceman sad Remo is much better than Evans. I will tell you my experience with with bongo heads. It is not same for congas, but I think it is very similar. Bongos with Evans sound much more loud and cutting, but plastic. remo tried and for me achieved imatating real skin, with their fyberskin.
So I prefer Remo instead Evans!

Do the Remo's even fit this guy's Toca's?

Good point, BnB, a look on the Remo website should confirm. But from my experience if Evans are all that will fit, then fuggeddit. IMHO Rudy you should keep your 'hard earned' in your 'sky rocket' until you have enough to get some mounted mules from Isaac.

If you search for this topic you'll find a fair amount - thats what I did when I was looking at evans for my matadors. By in large (but not all) most don't care for them. As with most things it depends on taste and circumstance.

For me evans on a set of matadors was an huge upgrade so no problem - the other factor was evens has a nice deal on a set which remo doesn't - I went for it.

To my ears the macho sounded great and (as I expected from the posts) the hemra was tinny.

A bit of tape on the underside of the hembra cut that back quite a bit and I love my set now - caution - put tape on a synthetic skin and its there forever (in my case I had nothing to lose).

Thanks guys; I appreciate the input and it has helped me make up my mind. I have no real problem with the bison heads that Toca uses - I just thought the synthetics would provide a little more volume. Guess I could use mics, eh?

I did search, but only using the keyword "Evans". I don't know why I didn't think to use "synthetic heads". Guess I wasn't interested in anything other than Evans because I didn't think Remo made them for my drums. But it has been a awhile - I'll check their website. My experience with searrch engines on forums is that they usually don't come up with much.
