I've gotta say, watching you play your congas in the style that you do is as painful as watching someone play a stradivarius with rocks!

Papa! your lack of conga playing technique is painful to watch, it's almost as though you are autistic, in which case you are extremely talented in your world. I respect the fact that you have enough courage to put yourself out there for the percussion world, and all others to see, honest I do. Watching you flap your arms as though you are a baby bird trying to take flight would be a bit comical if you weren't trying so hard to make music.

I know I have the choice to watch it or not, that which you post on this forum, but obviously I've chose to watch it. I don't know if I'm more embarrassed for you as a result of each video you post or what, but I do know you are a brave soul to do so!

I'm sure that you are a great person with good intentions, and probably a better "kit" player than anything else. Please accept my apologies for anything in my post that may insult you, but I'm more apt to think that you are greater than that, otherwise you would have ceased doing so a while back.

As brother BNB suggested, why not try playing "just" congas, this way you might focus your energy on developing your conga playing technique!

Many blessings!

Onile!

I would have to agree in full! ??? Painfull to watch, it makes baby jesus cry!

BONGO, Did I read this correctly in one of your previous posts?

Bongo,
Bro learn how to strike the drum correctly, as with technique you will produce all of the sounds that a conga can give you more distinct ;it doesn't matter what style you play....you must get out of the conga its correct sound, also put more cojones into the action.
As of now it sounds as if Peter Pan was calling on Thinker bell.

"bruke" (type-o)
You obviously wrote your comments in english, therefore I assume that you read it and can understand it as well. If you read my post you will clearly see that I wrote it with the intent of illustrating my point that 'bongo' (with all due respect) is clearly making a valiant effort to share his skills/talent with the world at large. However, in doing so he has invited the percussion community (of all ethnicities/countries/origins) to make comment on his playing. There are those who have studied with the masters, those who are just entering the percussion domain, and those who do this for a living, I would assume that you are included in one of these as well.

You can dress a monkey in a suit, but when it's all said and done, it's still a monkey.

Now, this is not a slam on you nor bongo, it's merely a phrase used to illustrate the point of being truthful and not blinding yourself with the suit.

As I said in my previous post, I have respect for bongo for having the courage to do what he is doing, however he would probably be greater if he focused on one type of instrument at a time (congas, kit, toys, etc), he could very well be on to something here with his current set-up though. New ideas take some time to catch on.

Yes, actually I’ve played for 35 years. There is splendid isolation in the Oregon foothills, it is a long way from Cuba.

A long way from Cuba it may be, but even further is Sydney Australia, that dont mean squat though. ???
Being Cuban dont mean s h i t, my deepest respect to the pioneers of afro cuban percussion, but just being Cuban doesnt mean you can play, not by a long shot....

I find it hard to believe you have been playing for 35 years yet cannot produce a clear tone and have extremely, devestatingly poor technique. I simply being honest and clear with you.

I am not attempting to insult you. By putting vids up on the internet you should be prepared to receive all types of feedback, both good and bad. You must accept this by putting it up on a forum which consists of a strong majority of players who follow the rich afro cuban and latin forms / technique and schooling.

I am not trying to discourage you either. Contrary, I encourage you to learn. Those videos are shocking, Im sorry.
I could understand if it was your first week of ever touching a conga. But 35 years? I somehow find it hard to believe.

You can obviously afford good quality instruments, so I assume you can afford lessons from a good teacher? Instructional DVDs'/Videos even if not?

Seriously, I would encourage you to take some lessons.
You are deceiving yourself with what you play in those clips.

Good luck with it all, I really hope you invest in some lessons.

I'm waiting for Charlie the kookie' to come screaming with his capital letters any minute now.

I offered my opinion about bongo's videos a few weeks ago and a bunch of people jumped all over me.

Come on, these opinions are about music, trying to offer real advice. Onile, Abakua and others are right on.
This is a website dedicated to congas, anyone putting up a video is open to criticism, how else can we learn???

Bongo needs to learn real technique.
Offering him anything less is only encouraging him to continue drowning in fluff.
He obviously has dedication. With better technique this guy could be a good player.

I don't think Bongo is done learning yet and I won't be surprised to see him get Tomas Cruz' instructional DVD's.
In 6 months he will be a monster! Then we can all thank Bro Onile and Abakua for their tough love. :)
