Here's another one. The other Isla thread has some comments about flaws... yes, there are some file marks and some wood grain. They are hand made by a real person with a file in his hand.....their name is written on the inside of the drum, right next to mine.

Minor flaws, who cares... no drum stays 100% pristine if you are using it!

So I ordered an Isla quinto awhile back but have not posted anything about it until now. I have had it for a few months and it sounds awesome! I have never heard a better sounding drum, just a big fat rich tone with some great slaps. I have not had any problems with workmanship or anything like that. The only problem is that I cannot play my other congas because they just can't compare. I only want to play my Isla! I have my original set of Matadors that are great, they just need new muleskin heads and I will hold onto them but I don't think that I will ever go back to mass produced tumbadoras again. These Islas just have too much alma y sabor. I love that old school, folklorico sound. Count me among the happy Isla customers! :D

Well, you've all got me drooling over the Isla drums now! lol.

In looking at all the pics I notice that some of the heads are a nice medium brown color, and others are more tan. Are some of the picks with different skins than the stock steer skins? Are some skins just darker than others? Are some skins looking darker because people are using shea butter (and other treatments on them?

Thanks!

NP, The heads on my Isla's are the stock skins. They are that color...nothing added or applied. For me, these skins are great sounding and great to play. It was the color of the skins that first drew my attention when they were posted on this forum back in June or July. They feel natural and work well with the shell.

best wishes,
Jim

Alafia Abure Congadelica!
I hope that you are well and abundantly blessed my brother!

Okay, they are sounding sooooo sweet that I just ordered my fourth drum (13") from Mario this past weekend!

Chacho! They sound wickedly good and look great. I've taken them on most of my gigs since I received them. Honestly, I don't have a bad thing to say about them! Understand however, that I did change up the crowns to my preference, and mounted some of Abure Isaac's mule skins on them.

I use Sennheiser e604s to mic all of my drums and the original Isla crown wouldn't let the grips of the mics take ahold. I don't have that problem now.

Many blessings!

Onile!

p.s. tell Mario "Tony" from Phx. says Como esta familia!, or just "hey"
Que Nsambi les acutare pa' siempre!
