FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT REMEMBER THE OLD FORD GRENADA COMMERCIALS. THE FORD COMPANY, HAD THE GULL TO COMPARE THE GRENADA TO A MERCEDES BENZ. EVEN THOUGH THIS COMPARISON STILL FALLS SHORT, IT'LL DO FOR NOW. LP IS A COMMERCIAL COMPANY THAT PUTS OUT COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS. WHICH MOST CONGEROS AND OTHERS ARE EASILY EXPOSED TO.

ISLA-PERCUSSIONS, IS A COMPANY THAT IS DEDICATED IN BUILDING, BY HAND, TRUE AUTHENTIC AFRO-CUBAN FOLKLORIC RUMBA DRUMS. WHAT SOME PERCIEVE AS A FLAW, OTHERS WOULD CHERISH AS A ONE OF A KIND FEATURE OF THEIR DRUM (CHARACTER). THE TRUE SIGN THAT THE DRUMS ARE TRULY MADE BY HAND. ISLA DRUMS ARE SPIRITUAL RUMBA DRUMS, AND ARE FOR THOSE THAT ARE TRULY SEARCHING FOR THAT REAL CONGA DRUM. ISLA DRUMS ARE NOT FOR THE UNDESERVING. THEY ARE FOR THOSE THAT EITHER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, OR FOR THOSE THAT ARE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GO WITH THERE DESIRED HOPE TO TRULY FIND THE BEST. PLEASE, DON'T MAKE YOURSELF LOOK FOOLISH BY EVEN TRYING TO COMPARE AN LP DRUM TO AN ISLA. THERE IS JUST NO COMPARISON. ISLA OWNERS KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

LP'S WITH STEERHIDE, OR MULE SKIN UPGRADES, DO DISPLAY IMPROVMENT IN SOUND. BUT WILL A GRENADA EVER BE A REAL MERCEDES BENZ? LOOK GUYS DON'T EVEN TRIP, IF YOU TRULY LOVE CONGAS FOR WHAT THEY SHOULD BE, AND ARE TIRED OF HAVING TO TAKE ON SCIENCE PROJECTS INORDER TO IMPROVE YOUR DRUMS SOUND. GET THE REAL THING. SPEAK TO MARIO HIMSELF, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

MARIO'S DRUMS ARE ALL MADE TO LAST A LIFE TIME, AND THEY ARE HIS PASSION: SO DON'T TRY TO
TO COMPARE MACHINE MADE, TO HAND MADE, BECAUSE THE MACHINE MADE ITEM WILL 99% OF THE TIME SEEM TO LOOK PERFECT. IF IT'S HAND MADE THERE WILL BE SOME UNIQUE BADGES OF HONOR. IV'E BEEN PLAYING FOR YEARS. I COME FROM A RUMBA CULTURE, AND FAMILY OF MUSICIANS. I'VE PLAYED LP'S MOST OF MY LIFE, AND OWNED THE DRUMS THAT SET THE STANDARD FOR ALL, (GON BOPS); SEEN, HEARD, AND PLAYED MANY OTHER BRANDS AS WELL, YET I KEPT SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT SOUNDING DRUM, AND "THANKS GOD" I'VE FOUND ISLA PERCUSSIONS. ISLA DRUMS HAVE EVEN SURPASSED GON BOPS. BECAUSE UNLIKE GON BOPS, ISLA DRUMS WILL ALSO GIVE YOU AN AWESOME LOW BASS RESPONSE, RIGHT DOWN TO IT'S 9 INCH REQUINTO. HEY GUYS, GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN. REMEMBER THE PREMIER DRUM MAKER, JUNIOR TIRADO? WELL, THERE WAS JUNIOR THEN, AND NOW THERE IS MARIO. THE ONLY TWO DRUMS I WOULD OWN! I HAVE ALREADY TRAVELED THE LONG ROAD.

I agree, Islas have great feel and tone. They are hand made and look like they are. I did not like the semi-gloss finnish on my drums so put a satin finnish on them and they look great! I'll post a pic of them as soon can as I am still applying more coats so I buff them out

Well said, Charlie! I love the "science project" comment. Can I use it in my assortment of one liners? Its right up there with " the road to hell is paved with good intentions", and "things are never what they appear to be". I'm in the middle of a divorce and secretly trying to figure out how to get 3 Islas. Buck

With all due respect Charlie I'm sure you played a set of Isla's before you decided just to go ahead and buy them. As I said before they are hard if not impossible to come by in England. Surely that would be the ultimate science project, just to go ahead and order a set of drums that you had never laid your hands on..... that's one hell of an experiment.

Actually if i am correct i believe he ordered them after seeing the isla percussions rumba video on youtube. After hearing the drums on there he decided he had to have them. He never played them but i definitely see where your coming from Conguero it is tough being on the other side of the pond and making such an investment without seeing them first hand. I made the plunge without playing a set but i will admit to being a little concerned about it. I was not disappointed. I am very pleased with my set. By the way Conguero please check with the shipping laws there i have read they spray some chemicals on the skins being sent in and keep them for some time (quarantine) ive heard this ruins skins i would hate for you to order skins just to have it ruined.

Conguero, You are right about wanting to see or hear a drum before you buy on, that is very a very normal opinion.
Despite the very vocal support of Isla's, they are still a handmade product and have their quality control issues like any other product.
Seeing as you are all the way in England, things like getting parts easily, warranty's and such is something to think about when you are gambling close to $2,000 on an unseen product.

bongosnotbombs,
you are an amazing individual. it is obvious that you are defiinately not a Congero let alone a Rumbero. you don't even have a clue. Can you even play Bongos? Is the best you can do, actually breaking the law? ie taking down No Hand Drumming Signs from Sanfrancisco parks and trying to make yourself look like a Robinhood of sorts. You don't have the slightest clue as to what a Rumba Drum truly is. real players don't have time for the silliness or foolishness you have displayed.
You are trying to put down the very drums, that, true Rumberos and Congeros have been raving about. Infact all you deserve is a djembe drum and a Tied Dyed tee shirt. bnbs if you can even play, show it or just continue with you drum Circles, because you are niether a Rumbero Nor a congero, let alone a true Bongocero.

ISLA BACKS ITS PRODUCTS AND WOULD NOT LEAVE A CUSTOMER HANGING.

Yambu123,
those are very personal comments about me you just posted. I don't think I deserved it. All I did was offer a personal experience that was different than yours. I never said Mario would leave anyone hanging. I have'nt even made a negative comment on them. I did say they sound very good and they have a great price. I hope Mario sells all the drums he can and wish him all the best, especially after he graciously sent me that dvd of him for free.

Like I have said before I have seen three sets of Islas with flaws. On set had gotten a bad batch of metal and the rims bent. The owner had to send it back to be repaired. Another drum had a very obviously crooked lug and lug plate, noticeable from across the room. Another drum had a seam missing glue along the outer edge, so it was a kind of gap between the staves. Two of the owners were very disappointed with their drums.

I'm not putting anything down. I am not making personal comments about anyone. I just have a different opinion than you do, and I am giving it to this person who is asking for advice so that he can make a better informed decision.

CONGUERO, I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERNS. MONEY AND UNCERTAINTY WOULD WORRY ANYONE. AND YOU DO HAVE DECENT DRUMS, SO YOU ARE DOING FINE. REMEMBER THOUGH, IN THE FUTURE, IF YOU ARE READY TO MOVE UP TO AND OWN ISLA'S, MARIO WOULD SURELY BE GLAD TO MAKE YOUR DRUMS, AND SHIP THEM OUT TO YOU.

IT'S ALL GOOD, TAKE CARE :D

BONGOSNOTBOMBS,

IT'S ALL GOOD. WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN REASONS, FOR THE PATHS WE TAKE. IF WHAT YOU DO, TRULY MAKES YOU HAPPY, IT'S ALL GOOD.

ENJOY AND PROSPER.
