I got some skins the other day from a forum member blango, he's in the skin supplier list and local, and a heck of a guy..

anyways I bought 3, I needed one for a quinto I just bought and thought the tumba could use one, and then just decided to do all 3..

so I get the quinto and tumba on last night, two heads in a day is enough for me, and saved the conga for today....

so I'm pulling the skin of the hoop after soaking for about an hour and...
"CLINK"

the hoop breaks! It was old and a little rusty, but still,

good thing Tonio started that other thread, but I'm an architect and I got a remodel job downtown where they are installing structural steel, so I'm gonna see if they got a welder there to fix me up.

blango's skins are great (his real name is Tony),
I really like the quinto skin, really looking forward to playing it,
it's nice and thick and has a smooth surface.

You know there's really something cool about being able to call a guy
up and meet him the next day to pick up your top quality skins!

Okay, enough plugging....

Thanks for the kind words Bombs!

Im glad you like the skins. Im looking forward to hearing them, and please do tell how they sound when they dry up.

fyi - The skin hoop can be simply taped together, as the dried skin holds it very tightly. Welding would be nice, but it will work fine either way.

and if you want a smoother surface for faster heel tips, you can sand the skin lightly with very fine grit paper and it will make it smooth. But use very fine grit, for sure.

I wouldnt recommend a totally smooth surface, as i think it lessons the sound of a slap, but its a personal preference thing.

Have fun, and thanks again Bombs,

Tony

doh!! I never had that happen to me. I actually cut a LP hoop the other day to try thebreeze's method. Its like they are under pressure, or squeezed before welding. It popped open.
I will be going to a fab shop to get a hoop made to see how it goes. I also got some skins from blango in the works too!!

BNB, get those wrinkles outta there bro!!

Just a thought---

Not everyone on this board will have a fab shop local to them that can make these hoops, and so if some of you find a local shop that makes good hoops, perhaps you could earn a few dollars by supplying hoops on a custom-order basis.

Well the welder wasn't on site today, and I'm too impatient so I used.....................duct tape!

Put 2 pieces on the one widthwise and on lengthwise, the skin really does hold the hoop into place.

Alafia Abure BNB!
I hope that you are well!

I'm curious, while looking at the pics you posted, your newly mounted skins look like they have some sharp/rough edges to them. Can I ask what you used to cut the excess skin with? It's just that it looks as though it might be a bit uncomfortable when you begin playing it.

Those do look like some nice steer skins!

Many blessings!

Onile,
Thanks for the concern, I use a new razor blade, I've trimmed off some more of the edges since the photos. When it dries I take sandpaper and smooth the edges more. I think part of it is the photos too, the krinkles kind of look like points, especially on the red drum.
I'm still improving my skin mounting technique, but getting better each time.
