buckoh,
Thanks for posting this link to the Times. I was hoping that there'd be mention of Patato's death in the Times, Voice, etc..

I love the matching Kangol and drums in the picture they used!

it's confirmed. Just got a call from a percussion mentor (Victor Sterling) who works with Steve Berrios (the drummer). He died of respiratory failure. Dec. 4th. I'll post more info as I get it.

Seems like we have lost a lot of great conguero's in the last year or so.

Patato.
Ray Barretto.
Anga.

So sad, especially Anga leaving so soon. At least Ray and Patato lived long full lives.

Still very sad to see them go.

Sad news about Patato (R.I.P.) A great conguero, a legend.

In 2007, the world also lost two great elders of the drums, Cuban rumberos:
Esteban "Chacha" Vega Baccalao
and
Mario "Chavalonga" Dreke

R.I.P.

Those totico and patato albums are classic. Love hisplaying, he will be missed. Looks like Candido, aguabella and peraza are the only guys left here in the US from that generation.

Patato!
Enjoy the eternity as you brought us the beauty of tumbadoras playing and widening the borders of techniques! A great man with a great desire for groove!

Rest in peace,
