This last weekend was the twice a month rumba at La Pena cultural center in
Berkeley. I've been told it's been going on 7 years now.

It's a great event, the musical standards are quite high, probably a step or two higher than the rumba the week before in SF. The SF one is a bit more cozy and casual, the La Pena event is a little more formal.

Both are great, and if you have a chance to visit I recommend both.

The guy in the yellow pinging away on a hoe blade (forgot the spanish)

The Rumberos had a pretty good set of instruments in the ensemble, here's the cajons and guagua

of course there was clave too, shekere, that hoe blade thing, then the tumbadoras; an Isla conga and tumba, LP quinto and Sol requinto, the choro was mic'ed but the girls kind of forgot to sing into them sometimes :O

So that's that, don't worry, I'm not going to post my horrible photos every week! :p

Just thought I post one from both sides of the bay as a way to show you guys what we have out here, and to get a record of it, you know in case someone does a search on the board for "rumba SF" or whatever.

You know, and maybe some guys out there just don't get to see much of this kind of event wherever they are...

BNB, you're exactly right. As far as I know, that doesn't happen in eastern N.C. I usually don't have the time to do it, but in Durham, N.C. they regularly do it. Some very good congueros & congueras there. They do bata workshops along with other AfroCuban genres. Sometimes Spiro comes in when he has business locally. I DO attend those! Thanks for sharing and a HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all. Buck

Hey- thanks for the reminder! This is my busiest time of year at work. I have to talk to my video expert to see how to chop those up. Thanks!
