Nice post congamyk. Thanks! Really enjoyed that one. Great sounding band, and yes, the lady can really swing. Will be studying this one for a while, for sure. Like the fills she used. I definitely need work on that aspect of my playing. Did get one tidbit I can make use of right away. Noticed her use of the tumba for the 2 opens of the tumbao. A simple thing, but one that adds a notable flavor.

Once again the 'split hand" style and this brother got "swing"...this is the method percussionist "Big Black" was playing back in the 50's and 60's.....u can almost see the connection between Candido's style and the bougarabou style.....from africa to cuba.....Johnny Conga...

Theres a lot of Cuba to Africa too, specially in Senegal where this was recorded. They play ( or used to play ) some really funky old school Cuban music over there. They give it their own flavor. I wish I knew more about the names of the artists over there so I could get some of it. I'm not talking about the new Africando stuff but some of their members might of participated in these recordings I think they go back to the 60s 70s. If anybody out there wants to shoot me some names I would appreciate that. Peace

That was some funky stuff there. Its funny that I only heard of the name of those drums recently. Seen them before, but not sure if I've ever seen anyone play them. Could they possibly becoming popular like the djembe? From the sound, the tension on the heads must be very high. The drum on his left sound as if it were a cajon.

Thanks guys, I found a few tunes from both of those bands. I still haven't found exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking for some covers of old Cuban songs from Arsenio and some other guajira songs. I heard the recordings from an underground radio station here in the NYC area a few years back. I never got the names though so I had them in my head but couldn't look for them. Maybe they were Congolese and not from Senegal. I'll know when I hear it. Thanks
