This looks like an interesting (although maybe useless) item on eBay. Can the ropes get enough pressure to get good tuning? [url=http://cgi.ebay.com/Sawatch-Timber-Drums-Conga-and-Quinto-Drum-with-Stands_W0QQitemZ250208096979QQihZ015QQcate

I've seen these before... I think I'd be a little bit afraid of the amount of tension on the ropes. I'm getting a set of rope tuned drums that use the mali (djembe) weave, but these look like they come off the drum a little to far for my taste. It's good to see that someones trying something a little bit different.

Looks like a combination conga / reverse Kplango.

I think those wood blocks slide on ropes to tighten ropes, thus easily tunable/detunable

The worrisome thing is those ropes pierce the skin, so if you point load one side you might end up ripping the skin.

Interesting idea...I'll stick with my rims/ lugs

if you read the description it is meant "for the recreational player who don't want to mess aroung with those heavy and difficult to tune congas"
the heads are so thin you can see through, to the grain of the wood!
expensive toys, nothing more

These look like they need to much work to tune. The ring looks like it overlaps.

You've got to love english.. pretty ugly..

OK, go ahead and back up and turn left right here.. lol

These drums seem to have thin skins. So they do not need as much tension as 'real' congas. But I guess there is lots of ringing.. definitely not congas... hybrid drums..

Sakuntu,

Bro, although I have no present use for these drums, I have to say that they lot a cleaner in make than truly traditional rope-tuned African/Caribbean folkloric drums. Many of us have seen some that are really very primitive and crudely made.

Clearly, beauty is the eye of the beholder. :D

I have seen these drums being sold by the maker at festivals and markets here in Oregon, so have actually checked them out. The wood work is quite beautiful, the rope tuning works well to tune them quite high, but this tuning system is not robust, kind of of flimsy really, and as said, the skins are thin. They will look impressive next to the potted plants, a docoration more than a serious drum, in my opinion.
