Rhumbatumba, I have played hundreds of gigs also; and in most cases I play on supplied congas, but when I have to take mine to the gigs they go in padded hard cases...is all about the respect and love for the drum. And when congas get thrown around they usually develop cracks, there goes the sound.

And if it starts to rain...I don't know in Oklahoma , but in most cases the show stops; unless you are under a big concert shelter. Otherwise you run the risk of electrocution.

You are a lucky man to have supplied congas at most of your gigs, I am not so fortunate. Only at church sponsored things do I get to play a supplied set.

I respect your view. For you its all about respect for the drum... thats cool. Your drums will look nice and sound nice. For me a good drum is a good drum despite the appearance of it's finish, its all about the sound. I have never had a problem with cracks even with my classics... and they were well worn from constant transport before I sold them for my current set of fiberglass which are even more durable.

As for the rain issue... a rain or shine even would have to have a large cover ofer the stage otherwise it couldnt be rain or shine. Reguardless, even a slight mist will completely change tuning on traditional heads.

Rumberos, I had the necesity of installing a mule skin on 1 of my Bongos. The problem I had was that I did not have help to do it so I decided to try the Olsongo strings method. Piece of cake, took me about 10 minutes to have the skin mounted.

Seisporocho,

Don't know if your question was ever answered, but if not let me refer you to forum threads on "mule skins" where you'll find plenty of reference to Isaac at Funky Tradition who's supplied mules for many forum members and is a consummate pro to deal with... Hope this helps.

Congatick,

Thanks for the detail!
Yes, I had already found Isaac's info thru the forum and ebay!!!
I ordered a wonderful medium bongo JCR cowbell from him a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it!
I also ordered a mule skin but I have been disappointed by the fact that it was charged to my card over three weeks ago and I still haven't received confirmation of it being in the mail at all. I'm a little upset cause I ordered it with intention of using it for an important gig last saturday. Regardless, I can't wait to get it already!

Hope all is well!

Franc todo bien aqui bro.
yes you can re-wet the skins and in cold water , hot water will take natural oils out of the skin. You can place the skin flush with the rim, but remember you will need lugs that will reach, I have some gon bop lugs that I use. You may also make some with the treaded rod they sale at home depot.

Give me a thick real skin head on a conga drum and I'm happy. I also like the Remo tucked plastic on bongos. To me nothing sounds as good as real heads.

I just ordered a 1/2 hide from Stern Tanning. I'll be doing about 5 or 6 congas and maybe a Macho. The first to be done are the Bauers. They have comfort rims and I'll need to find the thinnest part for them. I'll post the results. It will be a while, though, due to a heavy work schedule. Any tips will be much appreciated! Buck

If you check at the Volcano Percussion web site it has a very nice section on
re- heading your drum.
