As always welcome to the brothers..To the brother which said that what Candido and Taylor is playing doesn't sound like Afrocuban Jazz...I could said that my description is based in being into the jazz and Rock music since I was in Cuba,(late 1960's),and I have played all type of jazz,(again all), I have students which are professional jazz players, and have articles in consultations in relation to jazz...Now is somebody want to set the name of the type of jazz which a band could be playing...there is a need to know Musical/Structure, which is that way used to define the genre of music which a group is performing..and in the jazz field also there is need to know about the history of the genre becouse the labeling of the music have been change, (for whatever reasons).. JC,

The calluses just on the inside edge of the first joint indicate the continual target of impact in your playing style, possibly where your hand strikes the rim of the drum (?). If that's the case, I'm unaware of technique that requires the hands to impact the rim close to that first joint. For example, slaps are leveraged whips using the point at which fingers join the palm base. I can understand callusing along the fingertips and thsir associated pads and joints. To the best of your knowledge, can you explain the specific origin of your calluses in relation to your technique?

I have callouses along that same joint, not near the degree JC has.

It's not from hitting the rim, its from striking the skin. That area is one of the main contact points of the hand and comes in contact with the skin for bass, muffs and especially open tone.

Xactly bongosnotbombs...it is where i strike for my tones....some guys "tap" the drum...I "hit" the drum and there is a BIG difference....hence the callouses.....plus i play everyday, if not on a gig at least in my daily practice routine......Johnny Conga... :D

Ooops....I spoke too soon and put my foot in my mouth. :( :( In my daily practice last night I took notice of where my hands actually strike the head and, lo and behold---exactly the same spot! And a quick inspection of my callused areas showed them to be where yours are (though certainly not to that extent). Apologies for pulling the trigger too fast.
