I was looking for a requinto to go with my "Mariano" Gon Bops. I just started working on 3 drums a year ago and use a nasty, nasty little toca fibreglass drum just as something to hit. I wanted a cheap wooden drum that would at least sound a little warmer as 'for now' drum till the right GB match showed up on ebay at a reasonable price.
So I saw this ugly little duck on ebay and got it for $40 bucks (about the same for shipping). I thought I'd change the skin & paint or something ...
But by golly when this thing arrived and I tuned it up - dam if it didn't sound pretty sweet!
I didn't know what that band was around the middle - I thought it was metal. It was bluejeans! The seller said he thought it might be mexican - I think he was correct. Obviously the past owner stripped it and changed the hardware with some LP stuff (you can clearly see the old plate holes).
The guy may have beena autobody guy - theres some nice fibreglass work in that upper band and the inside has been glassed and theres some bodyfill. I think he also dyed the skin red (its got a pink hue). Its as solid as a rock ... Its weird evrything I'm saying would make you think it sounds like crap - but swear to God it sounds pretty nice. I don't even want change the skin anymore. If it ain't broke... All I did was paint the bluejean band (I don't know what he put that on with but it won't come off without a struggle) red and put some stain on it to darken it up.
Looks to me like a Pancake , I agreed with Bnb if it sounds ok, then it does not matter to me. I tell you what, that skin will sound super on a Bongo Hembra shell.

Tell me more about this nasty little fiberglass drum of yours! I have a pair of these nasty little drums and I was hoping that a skin change would make them acceptable but I haven't gotten around to it yet as I just bought a nicer Toca for cheep money and I'm waiting for that to come before I sink a lot of dough into the fiberglass drums that I already have. Savy? Any way, why is your little Toca so nasty and what have you done to make it non-nasty and did any thing help any?
As far as your Mexican drum goes I think that it looks cool and that it has history behind it. I lok at that drum and try to imagine all the places that it's been to and things that it's seen and all the hands that may have played it over the years.
