Neil Clarke has been around since the 60's...primarily working the Jazz, R&B music scene and african dance drumming scene.....notice he is a lefty with his quinto to his right then conga in the middle and bass to his left(ol skool)...also notice the "classic split hand" style he has....Im glad you younger players can see this almost "lost" style of hand drumming, that I have always talked about here.....he was playing with piano player Randy Weston in this video...Johnny Conga...
A few weeks ago our band of folkloric study congueros did a bit for our local television show CCTV. It turns out that the Jazz drummer who does a regular local music talent installation on the channel used to be in our study group 20 years ago or so, albeit long before I joined. And he wanted us in a big way to perform one night. So we dutifully agreed on a tuesday night in the middle of a snow storm and my rampant sickness.. I was in way worse shape than it looks on video! So, I got a copy of our show in some crazy format that only DVD players can recognize, and had to learn new video editing software to manipulate. Then, cut a segment of something to begin a process of maybe 3-5 video clips from our hour long performance. And here it is! Bamboche playing Iyesa
It's dark, and obviously I have to go super rudimentary, with one armed tresillo, to sing on that song, but I felt it had the right vibe so I'm putting it out there. Enjoy.. Dave
Real sweet. I went to a different Armando Peraza tribute show in San Francisco in Autumn 2007 (at Yerba Buena), and it was so great to see Armando still doing his thing.
