Musical styles of Puerto Rico

How many original musical styles does Puerto Rico have? I read on another post here that Puerto Rico is the main place for afro-influenced culture outside africa and was curious to know. I heard of bomba and plena mostly from people from around the way, the little I saw was really funky with good swing. I'm curious to know what else is there. Peace

They also have what they used to call "jala jala", also aguinaldo, and jibaro music....Johnny Conga....

When you talking about "Bomba" you are talking about many different styles of "Bomba" like for example rule, yuba, sica and many others.
You have what is called "musica jibara" comprised mostly of aguinaldos and and endless styles of "Seis".
Also you have "Danza".

Exactly, Brazil, Cuba and that's not even mentioning the USA which has flooded the world with Rock & Roll, Blues, Jazz and Gospel. Each of those art forms (individually) have had far more cultural impact on the rest of the world's music than everything put together that has ever come out of Puerto Rico.

The styles of Puerto Rico don't fascinate or intrigue me at all. Bomba, plena, jibaro, etc. just don't have the compelling groove or intellectual composition that Cuban folklore and later genres have.

To each his own, but to state the bomba or plena does not have the intellectual composition that Cuban folkore has is news to me....Los Pleneros de la 21, Viento de Agua...Los Cepeda Brothers...Ilu Aye, Hermanos Ayala, Alma Moyo...I don't understand how the groove emitted by these groups is not up to snuff with their Cuban counterparts...but to each his own...
