I have an Isla requinto that the guys over here love when I bring out. I ordered the tumbadora back in February that I can't wait to get. I have 3 boys with the newest addition having been born in January so I understand why Mario is taking longer than usual.

I have the canoe wood in early american finish. However, I've noticed that the same stain in the cherry wood is a little more orange than on the canoe. I'm assuming its because of the texture of the wood but am curious to know exactly why it comes out different.

The cherry's are not stained, that is the natural color of the wood with some sheen finish.

Interesting, thanks! So is that why its called cherry wood, because of the color?

Jay-- I don't think so. The cherry wood comes from the cherry tree, which produces cherries. Red colors have been sometimes called "cherry", after the fruit. The wood of the cherry tree is also red, but it's not named "cherry" because of its reddish color... it's named "cherry" because it comes from the cherry tree.

If you go back and look at the workshop pic I posted you can actually see a couple of drums in the back in unfinished cherry. Compare that to your drums. I would think that any stain you put on cherry would interact with the natural shade of the wood, so it would stand to reason that the cherry version would different.

Does anyone have any experience with the ebony stain and canoe wood? I'm hoping that the grain with be visible in the finish, and that I won't just end up with black.

Id ask mario to do a samler first and maybe send you a Photo of the sampler in daylight. Ebony stain is less transparent than mahogney think Piano s.
ony is pretty much a soli colour .

I think a sampler is a great idea. Thanks, I will ask for one. I know what your saying about pianos, but I think the finish that Gon Bops used to offer (see pic below) allows the grain to come through beautifully. I'm just hoping I can get a similar result with canoe wood.

I actually had a dream last night that my Islas were ready! In retrospect, they were the wrong shape to be Islas, and the wrong color to be mine, but for the sake of the dream, they were my Islas. I picked them up in person from Mario, and I was so excited, but Mario told me not to play them for 3 or 4 days because they weren't quite ready for playing yet (I guess that part qualifies the dream as a nightmare  ).

*Sigh* It's gonna be a long 2 months.

That's kind of how I've been thinking of it. And the funny thing is, the drums in my dream looked and felt REALLY old (in the sense of "ancient powerful wiseman" old, rather than "beat-up rusty car" old), as if they were made by an African tribesman or something. If THAT'S the spirit of my soon-to-be-Mamas, then I'm in for a real treat, and I can't wait to let them sing through me.
In my dream, there was a whole host of other people gathered around when I picked up my drums. I don't think they were anybody I know in my waking life, so I wonder who they were... :?:

Dreams are fun.

The key is to apply only a few coats. I would applied one coat and go from there. With stains the more coats you apply the darker the color gets. I think somebody here mentioned that canoe wood is really poplar and if I am not mistaken Poplar take stains well.

Thanks RitmoBoricua. That's reassuring. I will start a new thread as soon as I get a new progress report from Mario and keep everyone here posted. Haven't had any dreams about mine yet... but no nightmares either so I guess that's ok.

Can't wait to see how everyone else's turn out too.
