Hello Abakua,

(Mr Bongo) Mr. Jack Costanzo has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world not just me. I do consider him a Master of the Bongo Drum and that is my opinion of him. I am happy you tell it the way you see it and no need to say you are sorry. You don't offend me at all if you don't like him. You have your opinion. I would not attempt to change it. I would love to hear some of you playing. It must be of a very high level. I am sure I could learn from it. I have learned something from every drummer I have ever seen or heard. I try to look at what a person has to offer, not what he or she may do poorly or what does not fit into my scope of things. Every one has something good to offer if you look for it. I made sure all of my students heard Mr. Costanzo's Music among many other players and I feel I would be short changing them if I did not at least expose them to Mr. Costanzo and his Music. Especially the students that love and study the bongos. I must say every one of my students that hears Mr. Jack Costanzo really enjoy his Music. Thanks again for your opinions.
Take care.
Mike

Here's a video I shot of Giovanni in Tampa. Personally, I'm not a very big fan of his style. I have yet to hear a solo of his that sounds musical to me... they all strike me as showing off his awesome technique and speed, which I am very impressed by, mind you. I just don't dig his stylez.

BUT, for those who do enjoy the man:

Those Carlos Caro and Giovanni clips, technically superb, musically kind of boring.
Really prefer Jack's bongos.
Those ANGA clips, now that's the stuff!

Hi Gallichio, Abakua,
I'd never heard of this guy until now and the video you showed made very skeptical as to his abilities. It doesn't show Jack Costanzo's abilities very well to see a rather sad video of him playing with sloppy technique and form when he's in his mid 80's (apparently he was born in 1922).

So I did a bit of digging and had a look on YT at some of his work with Nat King Cole from the 1940's as well as a show that looks like it's from the 1970's. According to Wikipedia (source of all truth and knowledge ;-) ) he studied in Cuba in the 1940's and played with Perez Prado, Xavier Cugat, Frank Sinatra and many others... I was impressed.

Now let me be clear - there's no way I would call Jack Costanzo a master in the sense that you'd call Anga, Tata, or Giovanni a master (that's another level altogether). But, in his day (especially considering the standard of players and the level of technique development in those days) the guy could play and had some pretty good chops, as well as being a bit of a showman.

check him out with Nat King Cole in the 1940's:

Not bad at all!

That's what I was posting about in the 'ideal sound' thread Johnny, switching the drums around to fill different roles gets some great sounds, I'm actually playing most of the time with my tumba in front of me now, although I must admit some of the reason for trying it initially was to break it's new skin in quicker. Boy, is it just me or has Giovanni lost some serious weight ?

Yemen Rhythms from city of Lahej, South Yemen ( Laheji Style ) on Bongos
from ISAAC. This is just one of the many Afro-Arabian rhythms
around the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf.

I have never used a quinto in my 2, 3, and 4 drum set ups. Though there have been times while on tour that equipment is provided for me, in some cases a quinto has been provided and Ive had no choice but to use it. However, in my own set ups and drums I have owned, I never use a quinto in my Latin setting band playing. My quinto is for other uses or use in non latin bands, like funk or dj work etc.
Comes from the schooling that was drilled into me coming up by my mentors. Just as Changuito says Quinto is for repicar/riff in a rumba, conga etc etc, not for son montuno/latin/salsa etc setting.
See me here live on TV with a former band, check the sound on the drums: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tp89pMkPqs

I use conga and tumbas (2)... or congas (2) and tumba.
I prefer the slap of a conga over a quinto.

Yeah it's something I do also. I would not use a quinto in salsa as it doesn't make sense. Though it's fine in funk, comparsa or a rumba. A conga gives you more room for your hands to move around too. I agree with what Abakua says about Changuito and what he says about the using the right drum for the right situation. I met Changuito in Cuba, we were talking about drums (of course) one day and he said pretty much the same thing. Here's a pic in havana (I'm on the right):

Hey JohnnyConga, in what context do you refer to one on the drums, as a quinto? Is it based on the rhythm he's playing. Is that Bembe he's playing? If that is the context I think I understand as I learned that rhythm from Bobby Sanabria's video, and I assume the Bembe setup is quinto left - conga center - tumba right.
