WHAT CONGAS TO GET?

Postby ANDROS67 » Mon May 05, 2008 10:31 am

Hi guys, i'm new to this forum and i'm keen to take up playing congas, only problem is there is so little infomation online about different makes, so i guess i'm looking for feed back on what to go for, i got about £200-£250 to spend, can i get anything decent for this price? or do i need to spend more? any help will be very much appreciated, thanks, Andy.

Hello and welcome to this forum!

WEll, the question what a good set of congas is has been discussed thoroughly over the past years.
Especially if you are just beginning, this thread might be useful:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3169&hilit=matador+LP+quality

If you ask me, you can´t go wrong with a decent set of Meinls or Matadors. I mean the older generation,
as there has been a decrease in quality on this midprice level. Watch out ebay or elsewhere, I would prefer
fairly-priced good set of used congas over them brandnew crappies :x (Aspire and the like)
Plus the money factor: 250GBP are roughly speaking 375€, aren´t they? A showroom model may show up for 350€
if you´re lucky.

Good luck to you!
Peace & drum

Hello I hope I can help you here. It just so happens I have for sale or soon to be advertised a set of meinl marathon classic , which Im sure others will confirm are a good set of entery level pro congas . These babies are special because I have re lapped then with North American steer heads . if you do your reaserch you will find most Congas are mass produced in thialand .
Not there is anything wrong with mass produced LP and many otheres use Thailand as a manufaturing source .
The reason I changed the skins is simple the standard Thia waterbuffalo heads dont cut it , or at least as you improve you will find they are too thin not enough warmth and sustain .
Well my babies have mucho voice .
I only mention this as you are quoting £ and I presume your here in the UK.

If you like I can send pics of the 2 congas I have for sale. PM me if your interested Im in the Nrth west near Manchester.
