That video looks good to me too. Its something like what I thought Tomas Cruz was going to do in his next video that doesn't seem to be coming out. I tried contacting him also through that website about 2 weeks ago but got no response either. I just e-mailed him through his youtube account to see what happens.

No to rain on anyone's parade ..but I have this video..it doesn't work for me..if u want to learn to Rumba, a video is not going to teach you all the idocyncrasies of the rumba, and in this video it's just him playing the parts individually.....if u want ot learn to play Rumba u have to find that cats that know how....a video is too limited to the whole Rumba experience...Johnny Conga

Hi Johnny, how would one check this video out? Can it be ordered or viewed online?
I agree the only way to learn rumba is to do but what about as an introduction to rumba?
For instance - if someone lived in a place where there is no rumba and could never be exposed to it - could they see this video and become interested? What do you think?

The rumba dvd come from Europe but can be purchased I think thru Descarga....the brothers name is Javier Campos Martinez....he basically plays a quinto with a trak in the background, NOT with 2 others guys or group and each part is shot individually...then into a split screen with him playing the parts..I haven't looked at it in a long time..so if u want to know more of whats on it I can look at it again for anyone that wants to more about it...Johnny Conga...

Ah, rumba. I truly admire and envy skilled rumberos. Their timing/phrasing and ability to overide base rhythms with punctuating highlights that inspire and are inspired by dancers continually fascinates and entices me. But I believe many (if not most) are genetically stamped with the ability to find the creases in the rhythm that work so well. I, for one, have some inherent rhyhtmic talents developed over the years, but not what I call the "rumbero gene". And no matter how hard I train and learn, I doubt seriously I would ever acheive their fluid mastery of timing and phrasing. There are other conga roads I can explore with far less angst.

J.C.'s advice about learning Rumba from a video is probably true. Learning and playing with rumberos definitely makes a lot of sense if you really want to learn this incredible rythmic form. As far as the video goes, I personally would not purchase this with the hopes of becoming a rumbero but if I learn just one small thing from it, just one little nuance then for me it's worth the purchase. Btw, I received a response from the company that distributes this video, RMP, out in the Netherlands. The cost is 29 Euros, about $44 US dollars which includes shipping. I asked about the regional coding of the DVD which is in PAL format. However, the distributor stated that "it can be viewed from any computer and modern DVD player but not on specific NTSC DVD players". Below is a link to their website with more info on this DVD.

Exactly! you can take the patterns that you learn from this video to the rumba and polish them there. I wouldn't go to a rumba and try to sit in without knowing at least the pattern and its location in clave. I still haven't reached the level which I want to be in before sitting in with experienced players but for now I try to learn everything I can from whatever source is available. Plus the price is about what an experienced teacher would charge for an hour lesson around my area. People you don't know wont teach you for free unless they are friends of yours or whatever so in my situation I stick to learning material. After doing the math it makes sense.

Has anyone see this guy named Meku that claims to be the best conga player in the world?
He's a fine player but talks *#*# about Gio and others.
His religious cult calls themselves "Israelites"

Dang, he sure is fast.. maybe a contender for the fastest licks competition.
And hee may even be the best today, but if he gets a disease, and loses nervous control of his hand, or if he dies in an accident, liver cancer, old age, then I guess he's not any more... The best is only a moment to moment phenomenon, even if we could agree on the paramenters.
For this reason a man should remain humble. If he's not, then he's deluded.

Severely deluded. It seems just about anyone with some congas and a youtube channel is a teacher or self proclaimed master these days.

Here is some serious PLENA de Puerto Rico....Victor in the beginning is demonstrating his skill on the Pandereta but he actually does some things even reminiscent of the "Uzbeki quartet" on the Pandereta before they all start to "Plena Down!"....it smok es!....Johnny Conga....

Giovanni with Eddie Palmieri 'Congo Yambumba' Nice to see Giovanni in this Salsa setting, for me this is a first. He certainly can do it all. His tumbao is smooth and swingin. Again great to see him playing this way. The band behind him ain't bad either.
