How to Play the Conga
Play the conga, including tuning it, setting the stand, playing slaps and mutes, Latin grooves and jazz beats; learn how from our conga player and percussion instructor in this free conga tutorial video series.

Summary: Conga drums have a sound all their own. Whether you are listening to Latin music or you are joining a jamming drum circle, congas bring rhythms to life. Not only are they extremely fun to play, conga drums make you want to get up and dance! Congas are a narrow, single-headed Cuban drum of African origin. As an integral part of rumba and Latin music, the conga drum has a sound all of its own. Traditionally used in religious ceremonies, the conga has had many different names, and because of the creative techniques of playing the conga, this instrument can have a variety of sounds as well. As any conguero knows, this drum is one of the best percussion instruments.

In this free conga tutorial video series, learn how to play the conga. Our expert, Ryan Larson, teaches you everything you need to know to begin your conga playing. Learn how to tune and set up congas. Also, learn how to strike, slap, and mute a conga drum. Ryan even shows you some simple grooves to get you started, including jazz grooves and a Latin groove.

Check out some of the other video's on that site, they have a hip hop dance lesson that shows how to 'crip walk' !!!

Are we sure the whole site isn't some inside joke that we're not privy to ?

Hilarious,

Unfortunately, I don't think it is. I think they're just not selective about who can add videos.

The site is legit... i approached them and sent them a sample of what I do...They had no clue as to what "real" conga drumming is all about....I am only the second Conga drum instructor for that site...they sent someone to my home to video tape me... and voila!....it was meant for beginners....and for those interested in my Conga Camp Intensive....Johnny Conga....

Oh my, it is really annoying to see guys like this one mess up a musical tradition.

He may be a jazz composer as it says somewhere on that site, but this does not qualify him at all for anything having to do with
conga instruction :|
What is worse, as far as playing technique is concerned, he seems to be a loser without any clue whatsoever of how to play even a
SINGLE decent open tone!!!

Well, as for me, I can do without his instruction, even if I have to struggle hard
Peace & drum

JC,
Thanks a bunch for taking the time to post some vid instruction. I'm in PA and life and schedule does not permit me the luxury of visiting CongaCamp. However, based on the videos I would have to say anybody who can ought to take advantage of this pros TEACHING abilities. What I saw was clear concise and easy to understand instruction that can't help but make you a better musician. Again, JC, pros like you sharing are the reason this place is mysecond home.
