These videos are almost beyond belief.
I am stunned by their complete lack of knowledge and skill... Not only do they have no clue... they don't even know they have no clue.

That's the worst (and funniest) vid on congas I've ever seen. Surely this must be a joke?

Arrrgh! They must be stopped! :o

I think as conga players we must view their videos, give our feedback to them and the site and let them know what we really think!

2 shining examples:

If you care about the standard of conga teaching at the so called 'expert village' email jay@expertvillage.com and let 'em know.

It's not 3-4 pages, it's only a few posts mostly discussing ExpertVillage.com's bad conga videos.
I also think his (and other's) ignorance in these videos shows the uphill battle we have to educate people about our instrument and music.

Yeah ! it's only a few posts if you like ! No problem ! But I think to speak many about a thing give it too much importance. That feels the doggedness

I'm w/ Pavlo on this. We should let the site know that level of "instruction" does not have merit. And point to JC's vastly superior instruction.
Unfortunately, most common folk, and even some so called musicians think very similarly. Hey you just bang on those bongos(refering to congas) right? And yes alot of people call tumbadoras- cuuungas.
The guy on the bongos, was actually giving instructions as to snare and kick drum?? sheesh. Not to mention he had them sitting on top of his legs. At one point he couldn't even count time correctly?? what a bozo
I am personally not against drum circles (though I do not participate), but this Crap has got to stop. Well studied Percussionist have been put down for too long, like anyone can do it.

On another note: djembe played in a new way using the thumb on the rim, and non traditionally. Now this is border line, at least most of the folks that use that technique has a musical technique and sounds good. Is that the same as what we see on the conga/bongos?

This is one of the reasons I dislike youtube and myspace. The only good part is seeing/hearing the material of real master musicians of the past.

Hey Johnny ,
Couldn't see your vids there yet. I think ExpertVillage should remove all that other stuff (i.e. the guy with the 'paper tuner' [?!] etc for the 'coongas') and put your vids up. I know that you know your stuff.
cheers mate
pavlo

p.s. I've emailed Expert Village about the poor quality of their other vids online, and gave you a good rap at the same time!

They're there. But for some reason, they're listed under "drums videos" not "conga videos". You have to do a search for "Johnny Conga". Anyway, here's the link: http://www.expertvillage.com/video-seri ... -drums.htm

THANKS GUYS!....you can also see my vids on youtube.com type in search How to Play the Conga Drum.... yes unfortunately the people who run Expert Village, who I don;t even know...have no clue as to what an 'expert" in Conga Drumming and teaching it is all about....that guy was there before i got on to the site....they sought me out...so I appreciate eveyones comments on it....I have been having to deal with people who are not 'informed" or even 'schooled" in the fine Art of Conga Drumming, for years now....some like this guy, are making it up as they go along, and guys like me wind up having to "fix it up!"...guys learn the 'tradtional" way of playing first ok.....then when you have that under your belt, then open up to the Newer methods of playing...without Tradition we will lose that knowledge and the culture it came from....and the Conga drum has a very long tradition attached to it and YOU must absorb it ALL!....Thanks again guys for your continued support....Johnny Conga... :D
