High Quality Greek Mule Skins

Postby El Greco » Sun Jun 15, 2008 6:52 pm

Hola a Los Rumberos Del Mundo!!!

My name is Theo "El Greco" Godas.I'm an Afro-Cuban Percussionist and I come from Greece.I've been studying in Cuba along with Pepe,Yaroldi,Jesus Alfonso and Mi CONO DOBLE....CHANGUiTO THE GREAT!!!!
I'm also a Drum Maker. At the moment I proudly present my new Mule Skins that come from Olympus Mountain and Greek Islands. The specific Mule Skins have an extraordinary quality that comes from the fact that the Mules are being raised in their natural environment and not in stables.Very Importand..Animals are also free of any hard agricultural working for farmers.
Highly-Oxygen Dry Climate of Olympus Mt. and Iodium of the Aegean Sea offer animals this High Quality in their Skins.
These Mule Skins are avalaible just 2-3 times a year as it is very difficult to find them.
An extra plus in their quality comes from my 20-years experience in the Drum Making and Skin Treatment.
All of my Mule Skins are Totally Perfect.Super Soft when they are wet and Super Strong when Dry with Velvet-Suave Touch. As about any "Cutting Marks" or whatever you want to call them,on my Mule Skins will be ONLY on Grip Side(The external part of the diameter that you grab the skin to mount it on the drum).Nowhere else you will find any kind of imperfection nor I will use any kind of "Trap-Words" just in order to sell.I'm always going to be sending photos of the certain skin that someone is interested to buy,and not just a "sample photo".
The sizes that I'm offering are:12",13",14",15",18",19.5",21",22",22.5",23",24".Thickness from 1.2mm-3.1mm.
I will be happy to answer any of your questions so feel free to contact me.
I'm not interested in any tradesmen or wholesalers.ONLY MUSICIANS PLEASE.
Looking forward to your feedback!

Goza La Sincopa Porque No Hay Ma'Na!!!!

El Greco.

P.S. Soon I will add photos from Mule Skins mounted on Bongos!

I had a general interest type of question, what is the background of these animals ? you say they are not hard working farm mules, what are they used for ? Their life sounds idyllic on the Island mountain top in the fresh air but I'm guessing they are not raised for quality bongo skins.. :)

From my experience as a Drum Maker and as Percussionist as well I realized that animals that work under pressure(ex.carrying weights over their natural ability or being used for ploughing)get imperfections on the skin like bruises, marks, scratches, rubs e.t.c.,which affects negatively the quality of the skin, therefor to the quality of the sound too.
All these years I have been looking to find the best among a big diversity of skins.Animals that have been raised in different climates,
animals lived in stables or free pasturage in interelation with different ways of skin tanning has been my object of investigation.
Just in order to find the Best way of choosing the correct skin for an instrument.
I also have skins from Goat for Darabuka,Goat For Djembes(Original African Way of Tanning along with My Secret),Thin-Medium Mule Skin For Djembe(tottaly diferent way of tanning),Cow,Steer,Fish (For Darabuka,Riq,Bendir).Every single instrument has its own "character" which is achieved with a unique way of making it.
As about your question those animals were used for transporting people and other activities but never harshly used.THIS THING ASSURES THEIR HIGH QUALITY.
When I purchased the leathers, had a velvet touch on the hair with no imperfections at all.In the underside of the skin I've noticed some cutting marks(I suppose from the knife. The same is for cow, steer, deer, goat e.t.c.).These parts are not used at all.If you check any, will be only on the grip side(the exterior part of the diameter that you grab the skin to mount it on the drum).
I can make you sure that these skins are excellent for Bongos-Congas with a very nice look, rich colour, super strong and velvet touch. My 20 years experience and research on skin treatment makes me confident for that.I have many years that I ended up in the way of choosing my skins and the way of treating them each time,as I have told you already above.
Thank you for your interest and for any further questions I will be happy to answer you. :)

So, El Greco, how much would a thin skin for 7" macho cost? Would 12" be enough to work comfortably?
Does the price depend on size only or on thickness too?
How about thick skin for 9" hembra?

Hi Korman,
The cost for 12" Thin Mule Skin is $30.The certain diameter can be used for 7",7 1/4",7.5" Macho Sizes.
The price depends on the size and the thickness too.
But,as it is my first time selling my skins,I want to make it more accessible for any possible buyers.
This way, I hope to make my work and the quality of it well known.
That for,my first skins' price will depend ONLY on the size.
As for the Thick Skin for 9" Hembra I highly recommend the thickness of 2.5mm to 3mm.
You just have to give it a 2-3 months time to reach its full potential.
I hope I helped you enough, but feel free to ask anything more you like.

Thank you for your interest.

Best Regards

El Greco
