I need a favor from forum members

Hi everyone. I recently aquired a set of those mahogany solid piece bongo shells and I am going to see if I can find the bottom metal bases for them. Here are the exact dimensions I have on the bottoms, outside diameter on just the wood shells... macho = 6 inches. hembra = 6 and 7/8 inches. All I need is when you get the time if you can measure bongos that you have and if any make and model match any of these two measurements if you can just post that info down with the make, model, and the measurements you took. This would really help me out and it will only take a minute or two from your time. Thanks very much.

remember...the measurement needs to be on only the wood portion.

Will,

I just got back from NYC yesterday and I spent a few hours in Cali's shop (JCR). Do yourself a favor and have Cali make you the hardware. He made the hardware for my Timbas Ismael bongos and I have never been happier. His turnaround time is very fast and you'll be happy with the results. By the way, he had some nice bongos and congas upthere. He showed me some staves bongos that he made and they look very "criollo" very Cuban old skool.

Saludos,

Dario

re: The staves bongos on the shelf at JCR are being done for someone else
who brought them in for JCR's strong steel hardware only.

JCR still makes solid lathed tropical hardwood shells,
which resonate sound much more than the staved shells.

Dario....I won't go to JCR for two reasons...
1. I am trying to avoid ending up spending somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 dollars, and
2. If I have JCR do my hardware and I mount it on these Caribbean Rhythyms mahogany shells, I will just end up with a set of JCR bongos. I want to have something that will be somewhat unique and personal. Thanks for the advice just the same.

Again...if any one can help me with the following measurements from some of your bongos like Toca, LP, Meinl, or other brands please let me know.
Thanks...

I recommend giving the guys at the drumworks a call.
They are down in San Jose, and they supply a lot of replacement parts.

I have found them to be generally helpful and knowledgeable on the phone.
They might have better access through dimensions in their catalogs, or you might be
able to convince them to measure what they have in stock. Good luck.

I've never known The Drum Works to be located in San Jose, but I could be wrong. As far as I know, their retail location is rather in Pleasanton (see their complete address below taken from their website) which would, fortunately, be nearer to Will.

In fact, I've personally visited them in Pleasanton 2 years ago where I bought and picked up my Fat Congas String Cajon.

Hey Will,
You have a great sounding set of Bongos there.
Check out my "New to bongos" post as Yambu has a few conversion pics that look quite good on I believe the same set that you have (as well as me).
Cheers, Randy.

For me to do this, I had to actually use the hardware of two sets of Bongos. ( LP Gen 2's, and LP Matador's) because of size differences. This configeration works. It's not a perfect fit, in the sense of perfection. But, close enough to see just what these shells have to offer, and even use them at a Gig.

As soon as I have tuned them up High, and played them, I could tell the shells were worthy of the extra investment for a great set-up. I played them the next day as well, took photos of them, and then removed all the LP Hardware, and refinished them. you'll see the final product once it's all completely done.

Thanks again guys,

Charlie. :D

I hear you there Randy. The shells are really nice. Funny thing, I had to actually rip the heads off of the shells because when the bongos were made, the verathane finish was not fully dry as they mounted the skins to them. No loss anyway, it's the shells that matter and I started sanding the macho shell and it has some beautiful wood underneath. I will post pics soon with one shell sanded, and also with both shells sanded so you can see the comparison of before and after.
Manny and BNBs...I did not get a chance to contact the drumworks today but I have taken friday off and will probably pay them a direct visit.
Thanks very much.
