From paint cans or cajas to tumbadores, Olsongo, yes, good one, and as I read your post I was immediately taken back to my
childhood, when my mum bought tea in in wooden boxes - my first drums. Partly out of sheer sentimentality, but
also wanting to experiment, I built myself some wooden bongos a while ago which resemble those tea boxes of the past.

Back to the topic:

Couldn´t agree more with Charlie once more on the Matadors.

Among many other possible congas, those are the ones I would also opt for if I were you, Juan Mr. Conga

They are practically indestructible and provide a great sound. As has often been said before, the older models
are practically on one line with the famous LP Classics as regards sound.

So, my best wishes across the Atlantic puddle

And man did I think I was hot s--t on those paint cans, couldn't afford the drums, my parents thought I already had my talent which is drawing and painting and in a 5 kid family , someone else had to be the musician. So no drums for me at Xmas. But I had to get close to a drum...what did I do ? joined the local Drum Corp, they had plenty of drums; but no congas or bongos..bummer , so i had to settle for learning all of the rudiments,
Wanted to learn how to play the congas bad, and it wasn't till I moved to Kansas City that I ran into a teacher who thought me the proper technique and to let go of all those paint can bad habits, but in order to practice you had to have a pair of tubs, that's when I picked up a pair of blond Mexican pine congas, not the greatest but did the trick. Later graduated to a set of 3 GON BOPS. Now have congas and other drums++++up the ying yang.

Jotape,

---------------------------------------------------
Very well said!.....Muy bien puesto en contexto!..bien dicho.

They all say buy this buy that, Jetape in what context do you plan to use your congas ?
and how much do you want to spend truly.

Mr. Conga:
I´ve seen the youtuve videos of isla congas and I know taht is a very good choice... but is not the best choice for my in this particular situation... we will strart the "ensayos" (how do I say it in english?) very soon and I'm the onlyone who doesn't have my instruments and don't have a teacher...
So now I need money not only for the congas, I need some too for the tecaher.

Oslongo:

We will play some popular music like Sade, Toto (for example) and some jazz music made by us.... latin music like:Dizzie Gilespie, Michel Camilo, Nestor Torres, Jazz Standards... Brazilian: Gilberto Gil, Maria Betania, Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes...

About the money I could get US$1300, with that I can buy a 3 set LP Matador with basket stands... I think is a good price. So I will get them soon.

Here in Chile (very very south america), I can only find LP (aspire, matador, professional).

Conga matador= 293 euros, 465 usd... Is that a good price?? I had not enough money for that, but I if they worth it maybe I can make that money.
Another problem is that i like that Meinl congas... so I'm trying look for something out of my country, so I can find variety. I'm looking for Meinl Luis Conte or Marathon Clasics series (conga&quinto), I was reading on the forum and that's maybe a good and not too expensive choice for a begginer.

I thought that I should buy them by internet... i where looking in http://www.music123.com, but in usa the taxes, sending to another country and all that kind of costs are sometimes 60% the price of the product extra (somebody knows about that?). So I don't know where to buy them in spain, in England, in centroamerica?? how much do I have to pay to bring them here??

If I can't make the money for a brand new conga set, I was thinking that maybe I should buy them used...

IF SOMEBODY HAS ONE OF THOSE SETS FOR SALE (NEW OR USED) JUST LET ME KNOW....

Matadors are good, but since you're willing to buy outside of Chile, aside from the Meinl Luis Contes, I highly recommend the Gon Bops Tumbao Pros. Personally, I prefer traditional rims (Meinl Luis Conte and Gon Bops Pro) over comfort rims (Matador).

The prices of the Gon Bops Tumbao Pros are $229.99 (quinto), $239.99 (conga) and $279.99 (tumba) at Cascio Interstate (http://www.interstatemusic.com). At the same place, the Meinl Contes are $239.99 (quinto), $249.99 (conga) and $259.99 (tumba). Compare these to LP Matadors which go for $339 (quinto), $349 (conga) and $359 (tumba).

Best of luck in your search,

Jotape,

LP Matadors are good, but since you're willing to buy outside of Chile, aside from the Meinl Luis Contes, I highly recommend the Gon Bops Tumbao Pros.

Personally, I prefer traditional rims (Meinl Luis Conte and Gon Bops Tumbao Pro) over comfort rims (LP Matador). And, in my opinion, the Gon Bops Tumbao Pro has the best hardware.

The prices of brandnew Gon Bops Tumbao Pros are $229.99 (quinto), $239.99 (conga) and $279.99 (tumba) at Cascio Interstate (http://www.interstatemusic.com). At the same place, brandnew Meinl Contes are $239.99 (quinto), $249.99 (conga) and $259.99 (tumba). And, if I'm not mistaken, these prices of both the Gon Bops Tumbao Pros and the Meinl Luis Contes already include very nice basket stands.

Compare these prices to brandnew LP Matadors, at the same store, which go for $339 (quinto), $349 (conga) and $359 (tumba). These prices don't include any stand(s).

Between the Meinl Luis Conte and the Gon Bops Tumbao Pro, I'd personally give the edge to the Gon Bops, both in terms of quality and prestige.

Then again, if you can find good, used LP Matadors in Chile or elsewhere and they're significantly priced less than either the Gon Bops or Meinls, then that's another consideration.

Best of luck in your search,

Send me a private pm with your information, averigua cuanto cuesta el envio de U.S, a tu sitio, para ver si te puedo regalar unos dvd's, you can really learn from there, if you dont have a lot of money, or can't find a good teacher.

The Matador congas are an excellent choice to start with. They will last forever and sound great.

I've seen this video before but didn't notice he was playing Matadors. He gets some really good sounds out of them.

BTW I posted about this guy's, Akihiro Tsuzuki, collection of drums in another thread, he has a serious collection for sure, JCR, Junior Tirados and
Skin on Skin. If he's playing Matadors then they can't be bad!

Go to the link then click on "percussions" for some pics of serious drums.

Hey Jotape,

Purely by coincidence JohhnyC just posted this on the video forum

http://youtube.com/watch?v=hltBN-U1MY0

A solo on Matadors in a professional performance. These will serve you just fine until you are ready to upgrade.

Thanks everyone for the video links...
Maybe this week I'll get my Matadors...
