Hard Bongo case

Postby Mr. Conga » Sat Aug 02, 2008 11:06 pm

I noticed a few members were looking to get hard bongo cases, such as the Nomad case, they posted some links to reach the distributers, i couldnt find the post today.

But i have been looking for good protective bongo, or conga cases, kind of like the ones that use to come with the old school Gon Bop congas. For travel, you know if you are traveling they just trow the luggage, without caring what's inside.
I decided to buy 2 Nomad cases, from Musicians Friend, just got them. I thought they were hard cases, durable material, in the pictures it looks like black thick plastic, or plastic fiber.
I just want to let you guys know, those cases that several members were talking about getting one, are made out of thick cardboard fiber, and they are dark gray not black. If they are struck, or droped, the impact will reach the bongo.

I am very dissapointed, i dont recomend thi cases, i am returning both of them.
Let me know if you guys know of good hard cases.

There has been made good guitar, and violin hard cases, for road travel, but i haven't found one for bongos.
Beware! on this Nomad cases.

Mr.Conga..how are you doing? It seems to me that these cases were meant more for someone that would use them when they take the drums to local gigs where they will have minimal handling by other people, so that your drums can be scuff and scratch free. I can just imagine using these for airline flights! What I was going to suggest was if you have room inside the cases to put some of that foam that usually goes into road cases, and that way your drums will have better protection. Remember, if you decide to get some cases that will give you enough protection for airline travel they will mose likely be very heavy. So you need to decide if you want lighter cases for local gigs, or something heavier fit for airline travel.

Hope this helps a little.

I've never had or even seen one other than online but have heard this make is popular with traveling pro's.

This is the only link I can find with an image, you can google 'humes and berg' for more info I'm sure.

Good luck.

Mr. Conga,

Re: Nomad cases, I totally agree with you. I've researched them and they're not for me.

Not only do I doubt their inability to withstand rough handling, I don't think that they'd do well against the elements, such as getting wet.

I have and use Humes & Berg bongo hardcase (w/ interior padding). They're made of black flexible plastic (ABS?) and they're very tough!

I bought them last year from Woodwind & Brasswind (http://www.wwbw.com) for a reasonable less than $80 (cheaper than even some bongo soft cases). For $20 less, you can buy the same case, but without the interior padding. Personally, I highly recommend paying the extra $20 for the padding. It's more than worth it, in terms of protecting your prized bongos.

If Woodwind & Brasswind doesn't carry them anymore, you can try Cascio Interstate Music or Sam Ash. Both of them are also Humes & Berg dealers.

Best of luck,

The Nomad ones sound like they might be OK for a traveling musician who places all their stuff (including bongo's in the Nomad case) inside a larger road case. Just a thought there.

But it also sounds like if someone has a better hard case, then it might be best to purchase the better one from the start.

I am doing good, thanks for asking Will. I hope you are doing great, and abundantly blessed in every good aspect of life.

Yes, it could be that Nomad cases, are just to store away, and for minimal travel. The reason that i posted about them, is that the material is cardboard, and from the pictures all the distributers have, the product advertisement is a little missleading, from what one gets.

 The Nomad cases one gets, look very different, they are cheap. They are on clearance, but i would rather spend a little more for more quality.
If you are at a gig and someone, gets a little close and drops their drink the case will be wet, and swaggie :| .

If someone needs a hard case i would recomend going for the hard plastic mold cases.

Con una lluviesita leve, y se arruino la cosa!
Just walking to the parking lot, and a light rain, and the thing is done.

instead of buying those overpriced bongo case just cruise down to
you local goodwill and browse the used suitcases.

I found the perfect hard plastic case for my bongos, just $6.00!
The black case is for bongos the leather one is for bells and claves and
stuff.

BNB you are my Hero. Me, I got the Lp Pro bag which cost me about $60 some time ago, it is good to go from place to place but you have to be aware because the shoulder strap can snap off very easy. To fix that defect I bought one of those thing to repair chains that can snap on and off. Also I have a heavy duty case for traveling purpose, you can drop that case from 20 feets & nothing will happen.

Ha ha thanks Caballoballo! You always have your unique solutions too.
Sometimes what the manufacturers make is not up to a musicians need
so you have to get creative.

If your really serious get one of these Pelican cases.

Supertough! and they float in water too. They have locks.
A little pricey, but bomb proof. I'm sure they have
a size that would work for bongos.
