FYI There are two type of shells on these drums, the old ones had issues because they had no reinforcement in the tuning lug area, after tuning this would sometimes cause a buckling condition on the shell. Remo was clearly aware of this problem and changed the shells, Remo re-designed their shells and beginning in 2006 they started MFG their congas with the new and improved re-enforced shell. If you were to look at the inside of an old shell and compared it to a new one you would notice the obvious difference. BTW I have had two sets of Remos, the first set was replaced with the new and re-desined congas in 2006,

Lastly, my Timba's, what superb workhorses these are, great projection, deep tone on the hembre (which is a medium thick recycled mule from a quinto) and very earthy, chunky, percussive tones from the thick (for a bongo macho) bleached steer that I got from Ralph at Resolution. These are my funk and hip hop etc set, although with the macho tuned a little higher than usual they are great in a latin setting also.
I bought these after reading that they were modeled on the Vergara's and figured this was the closest I'd ever get to that set of Mongo's that Dario owns.

They are maraca's, no brand, my wife brought them back from a trip to the virgin islands as a gift for me. They are lovely, very light, and have a great soft sound. I'm sure they are sold there as tourist items rather than real music supply, I'd bet most end up as ornaments.

M. Smith tumba head, a thick steer that has some breaking in to do, but I'm hoping it's going to work out after initially thinking it wasn't a good match.
