Eco-tone sighting!

OK, so you can't actually hear them, but you really must watch this guy play them at the 4:20 mark. Oh, and that guitarist is not bad at all:

I do LOVE Jimi Hendrix ´ music, but in that video the conga player only does some drug-related stuff -
you can see that he can not really play properly. However, the congas are nice.

Tata Guines at ISA Habana.

This is one of series of clips from a masterclass featuring Tata Guines, Changuito, Poncho Terry and others filmed in 2006 at the school of arts (ISA) in la Habana.
In the first clip Poncho Terry first demonstrates some shekere followed by a short but very tasty solo performance by Tata Guines (R.I.P.) .

Here's a clip from The Eddie Palmieri concert at Lehman Center for The Arts on October 11th, 2008 in Bronx, NY. On the stage behind the tambores are, my current teacher and good friend, Little Johnny Rivero, along with conga giant "Mañeguito" Giovanni Hidalgo. The sound and video quality is not very good but it doesn't take away from these two masters of their craft.

Hello Abakua,

I wanted to tell you I really enjoyed your video, solo.

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=E0G4hythYrk

especially at the 46 sec mark. I love the rhythm you are playing, It had my ass up and dancing. What rhythm is that? Do you have that rhythm written? Or can you write it out? I would love to use it when I play. You are sounding great Bro. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Mike. I dont have it written, its a variation/adaptation of chachalokuafun as shown to me by Daniel Lopez (Cuban percussionist formerly of Albita & Gloria Estefan, now with Ricky Martin who formerly studied with Anga for up to 7 hrs a day when he was in Cuba and also attending ENA)

I will make a clip of how I play it and upload to youtube if you like.

Hi Abakua that pattern ur playing just before the drummer comes in, is actually a way of playing Mozambique the way we played it in the 60's and 70's...and NOT Chachalokefun....sorry...Johnny Conga...

I think you might be mistaken bro. I even showed Anga the variation pattern and he recognised it instantly and confirmed passing it on to Daniel Lopez. I will make a video of it to show it a bit more clearly. As I said, it is a variation of Chachalokuafun, not the authentic one.

I remember a discussion we had, you seeing the Tomas Cruz DVD and commenting on a variation of a pattern as it was known to you and others back in the day. Cant remember if it was Songo we were discussing or a Timba groove...

It is widely accepted that in the early days of Tumbadoras etc in the US even through the 60's and 70's to some extent, many authentic Afro Cuban patterns were misunderstood or misnamed or played in variance to their original form due to the block on Cuba etc and lack of credibal resources etc. available. World was a much smaller place back then...

I will try to get a short clip up in the next few days and we can discuss comparisons and variations.

I got a problem with this one. Lack of credible resources. Are you implying that people like Jose Mangual, Candido, Uba Nieto, Willie Rodriguez, Tito Puente, Manny Oquendo, Mongo Santamaria, Patato, Tommy Lopez Sr, Chano and Chino Pozo , Julito Collazo, Luis Miranda, Armando Peraza, Orestes Vilato, Milton Cardona, Francicso Aguabella, Ray Barretto, Ray Romero, Humberto Morales, Cachao to mentioned some were chopped liver. I do not see any lack of credible resources when I look at what took place in NYC. They just probably did what it was done in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic with the rhythms that came from Africa, helped the rhythms move-on forward a natural evolution process. What's wrong with the "NYC Mozambique"? Nobody is going to tell me that "La Perfecta" adaption of Pellos' Mozambique with Manny Oquendo and Tommy Lopez Sr masterfully handling the drums does not swing and is wrong. No Way Jose!

Actually i couldn't have said it better. I today teach how to play those Mozambique "one" drum patterns and 2 drum patterns, that Tommy played....it was some of the first patterns I learned from Mario Galagarza(Willie Colon's original conga drummer and student of Tommy). Johnny Conga
