Hey No. 2,
Cool video! That was great to see Armando Peraza kicking some serious chops and a young Raul Rekow playing alonside him. It was also great to see Orestes Vilato solo on timbales while Santana made his guitar scream! Thank you.

Congadelica, Sounds like you already know some form of yambu - maybe Havana. Have you seen these videos?

Looks like it could be a variation of Mantanzas style.

The first drummer on the left seems to be playing a combination of these two patterns.

BTW, It grabbed me when I first saw it also. I attempted to recreate it. Here is an audio of it.

Anyone familiar with this Ghanaian Rhythm? Sounds like comparsa. What other African traditional drumming form have a horn accompaniment, or could this be something contemporary?

Na bro, his name is Eric Michael Herrera Duarte better known in Havana Cuba as “Lucumí”. One of my homeboys lived with him and his family in Habana, and studied rumba with him and his crew etc etc.
When we were hanging with Los Van Van during their stay in here, Mayito informed us Lucumi is trying to get by selling second hand plumbing supplies, pipes etc to try and make a living. He wasnt doing to well financially and sadly not doing having much success musically so to speak. He is a mean rumbero and very versatile player.
I hope from the bottom of my heart he has had some luck come his way since I last heard.
Lucumi studied under Pancho Quinto, Tata Guines amongst others, he also was involved in the following projects/recordings Afrekete, Cuando los Espíritus Bailan Mambo, & Écue Tumba.

Here is a most recent pic of Lucumi:

Hi QG,
I spent a fair amount of time in Ghana, seeing and hearing similar kinds of events a lot, but I can't say I recognise this particular rhythm enough to pin it down - though it has a lot of similarities to a rhythm called "Ogé". Can you hear the 3/2 clave in there? (though in Africa, they don't call it 'clave' or '3/2', they just say, 'Play the bell'!

As far as the horn playing I saw a lot of that too, mainly in celebratory, secular music, e.g. Kpanlogo, Highlife, Kolomashi street parade rhythms etc.

Here's a really interesting example recorded by The Smithsonian Institute, check this out:
Ghanaian truck drivers playing 3 different pieces with instruments as diverse as hand squeezed truck horns, a tyre pump, large thumb piano (Ashiwa), drums, bells claps, vocals and a saxophone!

The horn ensemble that starts the video sucks big time. Nothing but noise. If there's a pattern there that I don't get-- it won't ever bother me. The stufff that follows is, at its best -- as you put it-- "interesting".
