Conga Shells/Comfort Curve Hoops

for years I always looked at congas and said what a stupid shell shape, no proper bass, big to transport and annoying to position a set. after owning 3 for about a year I have to conclude that I was right on all counts, finally what is the idea behind comfort curve hoops they get in the way and I hit my thumb on them it is like being a beginner again I cannot see their practicality very hard to play the open or closed tones with a relaxed hand without hitting them very annoying, congas are some of the most stupid hand drums I have owned, ps I have around 80 different drums.

I concur about the comfort rims, although there are slight differences between various models
as far as playability is concerned, because some comfort/soft strike or whatever rims protrude more than others.

But you definetely have a point there.

but BataFolas´ generalized statement is indeed odd and weird to the verge of nonsense.

Thats why you train your hand to keep the thumb out of the way of the metal crown, and you do that with practice, practice... the hoop is the ring of metal under the crown, holding down the skin. I have over 80 drums also and i love my tubs.

Please forgive me BataFola but I don't quite understand what it is that you are trying to communicate are you expressing a discontent with the comfort curve hoop or the conga drum in general? Or maybe both?

It is true that conga playing technique is harder than some other drums. But what can you do, only conga sounds like conga:) Regarding the bass tone - conga is simply not designed for that. It's never going to sound like a surdo! Having said that, there are some congas with more pronounced bass than others. Bauers have excellent bass, and so do Volcanoes.

If congas are stupid drums, then what on earth do you seek on a conga forum, eh?

Any way, old style or comfort curve, both are the same for me. Just a matter of design..

If you hit your thumbs on the rim, change your hand position since it is obviously wrong.

Also, yes congas are heavy, big and everything, but we know it and that's how we love them.
