Ear Protections

I am opening this topic because I just bought two pairs of ER20

I had to purchase this protection because I have a recurrent gig 2 to 3 times a month in a place with a tiny stage. The only setting my 10 piece band (8 only on the picture) could find was having the timbalero right behind me. I have 3 bells behing my head, 3 cymbals at ear level, the two timbales at shoulder level and the kick drum behind my back.



After two gigs there, I started to have some ringing noises that would go away after a day or so.

I will try these tonight and I'll let you know.

According to the brand, these protections, they filter only some frequencies and are developed for drummers...

I'll let you know.

- I can only encourage you to take care of your ears, especially in such a loud salsa band!
You´d also better sit next to the timbalero maybe! That would save some decibels too!

I play congas with these at the moment, even when I practice, because my ears are still sensitive.
And it is of course important that you actually HEAR tones, mere dampening would be pretty bad for musical communication.

In my careless early in the percussion suffered from an infection in the ear right not to be careful with the high SPL of both the practice and the gig, suffering much believe that the damage would be irreparable.

Luckily my ear healed although I have lost some high frequencies. We must take into account the protection you need to get used to it.

I have tinnitus, and after using many types of ear plugs( including custom molded Westones), I went out and got myself a Shure PSM in-ear system. Actually I borrowed a friends wireless unit for about 6 months, and when he needed it back I purchased a hardwired unit, being a drummer I'm not jumping around the stage much, and the wireless unit seemed to pick up other radio frequencies.
It took a little while to get used to them, but I love them now and I can adjust the volume coming into my ears. I purchased the Westone UM2 headphones as I wasn't to happy with the sound of the Shure ones. I highly recomend them, as well as the Shure system. I''m sure any in-ear system would work well. Hi all

To answer one of the questions, I cannot sit next to the timbalro because of the tiny space and the 3 congas set I use...

The model I have is not the same as the one you desribed. It has 3 "cones" instead of 2.

I first tried them at the beginning of the gig and it cut the piano and bass frequencies... So it didn't work for me at all.

Then, later on during the night, I just adjusted the plugs by pulling them slightly and it was just perfect!!! I could hear the whole band and when singing, I didn't hear me from "inside" anymore. I have the feeling that these plugs will be my best friends from now on.

That´s just great, 3 "cones" are even better as they filter more.

And you were right in pushing the ear plugs NOT TOO far inside the ear. That way you do not only hear better what the others play, but you also prevent other damage, namely ear grease pushed too much inside *yuck*

I have the same type, and they do cut out too much sound when you press them all the way inside,, however, I cut off the hard outer plastic cover which is the handle that sticks out of the ears.. They make you look like a Star Trek alien anyway. I found that the volume was just about right when I cut them off, and the plug no longer sticks out of my ears!

But - I thought the hard plastic thing is what protects your ears actually
OK, the look is a bit weird. Those plugs seem to be rather long anyway, mine are shorter and you do not even notice them.

Hey, good idea, I might cut out the plastic handle on one of the pairs I purchased to see the difference.

Y, as I understand it, the filter is in the sticky out bit.

Well, think about it,, there's still a big mass in your ear, and it's not like it doesn't do anything! It cuts out plenty of sound.
