Thanks! Changuiri, Good post. I especially enjoyed the Rumbakua video. I was inspired to work harder on singing and playing clave simultaneously when I, not long ago, came across some videos of 2 of the members. It's nice to see them perform, in the context of a full ensemble. They are very good players.
Here's one that you may like. This is a first for me - (Cubans playing Bomba) one of the top groups no less - Afro-Cuba de Matanzas.

That's funny. The guy playing cata and singing in the Rumbakua video is my friend/teacher Johnny, so I was surprised to see a video of his group being posted on this forum. He wrote that song, and he tells me this performance was from probably 2006 or early '07.

Wow! Your friend is a great singer!! Hey is that you in the video on your myspace page playing congas? Nice video about working with a band and everyone adding different decisions to make a final piece,, which plays over through the band working out parts.. very cool!

I'll let him know you said so. I'm sure he'll appreciate it 'cause he's never had any formal vocal training.

Yeah, that's from when we were recording our album. We had one last practice session the night before we began recording to finalize the song structures and to tighten up as much as possible. Thanks a lot. And by the way, Dave, it looks like I won't be going to the Humboldt drum workshop in July...'

...because I'm going to Cuba for two weeks!!! There's a percussion workshop in Havana that I'm going to and it falls around the same time as the Humboldt festival.

Light Seeker,

Congrats on the Cuba trip!!

By the way, I know Rumbakua. The guy playing tumba my close friend Charley Rivas! On tres dos, it's Rafael. Charley always went to visit his friend in Gainesville...I guess putting two and two together, it must be your teacher!

Also, thanks for letting me be a part of the album. Very cool experience!

BTW, I sent Carlos an email regarding the festival in march. Hope to hear from him today.

cheers

You know, you DO have my phone number and email address. :D
Anyway, yeah. Small freakin' world. Rafael actually went to UF. I'm not sure if Charley did, but he definitely does come to Gainesville occasionally. Haven't met him yet, though.

And thank YOU for being on the album. I only wish you could've had more time to stick around and play on more tracks.

Light seeker,
I believe Charley went to UF as well. Either that's how they met or they've been friends forever and went to school together. I spoke with Charley yesterday for a while. He was telling me about the Rumba Festival this past weekend in PR. I wish I could've gone to that!

Anyway, I think we can use the phone now! :P

Wonderful stuff, so vibrant and alive, he's probably in his sixties there I'm guessing.

All those cats (Armando, Mongo, Patato, Candido, Aguabella) are such incredible inspiration. I feel blessed to have lived at the same time as them, they wont be repeated.

Alafia Abures Mi!
I hope that you are all well and blessed this holiday season!

Okay, so here is my first video posting with my new Matthew Smith Ritmos. The video quality doesn't do justice to the true sound of the drums, unfortunately it's all I have at the moment!

I'm having a blast with them though!

Suave!

WOW,Onile. They rock! I can hear the volume of those clear tones, no ring,no over tones. And the slaps pop. Matt is a true master, and you are a very lucky man.

Re George and Armando: what I really like is the guy in the audience smoking at the end of the set.
