What congas?

First of all, hi everyone, i just started playing and well my cuñao's aspires are not cutting it plus i have to give them back to him soon... anyways ive checked around but cant seem to get a solid answer.. Trying to buy a nice set congas.. nothing too expensive, maybe $600 tops for now ? or $500 for 2 congas... Ok this is where i lack knowledge, what brand and model of congas should i look at... not looking for a beginners set something above that, also which drums are the most used when using 2 congas, quinto and conga ? or quinto and tumba? or conga and tumba ? Thanks in advance...

The Matador congas are highly regarded they are great congas can't go wrong there some will also recommend the Gon Bops Tumbao pro's as another option they are nice . I'll admit to being partial to LP Matadors they have a long and proven track record. As far as sizes are concerned most will go with conga/tumba and i like that set up but some also like the quinto/tumba not my favorite but many like that set up. I would say the most common setup is the conga/tumba thats what i see played the most. Definitely would not go with a quinto/conga set like they sell at the stores together it's commonly seen in the cheaper congas with time you will outgrow and really dislike that set up.

I would also like to add that the used market is loaded with gems your local craigslist might turn up something. I got 2 used LP classics for a great price new they would have cost me just around $900 for the pair and i got them for less than half of that price in beautiful condition.

You can get a set of three Tumbao Pros at Instrumentpro.com for $675 shipped with their 10% off coupon (type "holiday" in the coupon box at checkout). A conga/tumba combo would run you something like $450-500.

I would go with LP Classics used. I prefer quinto and a conga ( I have small hands ) and change the skin on them if they have the lp skin. The quality of the skin makes a big difference. I've seen them for about 400 for both I wouldn't pay anymore than that. They are worth more but since they are common you are bound to find some. I have a quinto and paid 70$ in perfect condition I put a skin for about 50$ and when I heard the sound I wished that I would of done that from the beginning instead of paying a lot of money for more expensive drums. Not saying my more expensive drums don't sound as good or better but you cant beat the bang for the buck.

Oye Fuji its all subjective and depends not only on your skill level but what YOU like. Hearing samples on line sounds only as good as the drummer playing them and your system that the sound is coming thru. Go out to music stores and bang on a few different drums then check and compare prices on line for the ones that work best for you. There is nothing wrong with less exclusive drums ie Toca, Matador, LP. Or as someone sugested earlier some used drums found on Craigslist or Ebay I scored 2 vintage Gon Bops on craigslist and put new skins on them for under the price of one new drum.
