I saw a Meinl Professional Series tumba on craigslist listed for $150.
I have never owned a Meinl conga but have heard good things.
The seller said it was in perfectly new condition and even came with a stand.
I checked it out and it looked and played beautifully!
Not a scratch -I offered him $100 bucks and took it home.

I love this drum so much I just ordered the matching conga from Explorers Drums to go with it.

I have the Quinto, Conga, and Tumba in the Pro series and love the quality of the workmanship on them. I do believe the LPs may sound a bit better,but they are still great drums. Enjoy them.

Congatulations, the set looks great, can you please comment on the sound of the drums? what do you think of the skins? do you think that you would like to replace them with a thicker set or are you satisfyed with the ones supplied ? just curious

The drums sound fine but if I had to do it over again I would not have purchased the conga.
The tumba has an amazing sound - perfect, huge, PHAT! The head is pretty thick and sound great.
Since I only paid $100 for the tumba it was a amazing bargain.

The conga does not sound as good and since I bought it "new" (retail) pricing for it it wasn't a good deal.
I bought the conga because I wanted to create a set to go along with the tumba.
The (conga) skin seems to be thinner and it has to be tuned a little high to get a decent sound.
When I tune up the conga it rings (sustains) too much, perhaps because it is so brand new, I'm giving it time.
I would welcome an opportunity to get a thicker skin on the conga - it would probably change everything.
If someone has any ideas on how to best pursue that, please let me know.

Depending on what you want to spend.

I suggest putting El Greco's mule on anything cause it's an amazing hide. Then again, it might be a bit expensive!

Secondly I recommend Bill Confer's bullhide. It has transformed ALL the drums I've used it on.

Thirdly, Moperc's cowhide is great.

Otherwise you can contact msb501clave for some nice options!

Congrats on your new set. Don't even sweat it, once you change the skin on the conga, you'll be more than happy with your purchase!!

Mike , Mule is an option... steer and cow are also, or even the plastic heads which I dislike. Do remember one thing..there has been plenty of excellent music created with what most of us use, cowhide. And when it comes down to it, a good medium thickness head and a well applied hand technique can do wonders, just ask Gio.
