maSSivdrums: Nice work on those congas, hand rub finishes look great on wood. Joseph: Also a great finish on your conga too, ive done paiste wax finishe's on drumset's and i love the natural shine you get. Ok I have drum's ive done in different finishes. First one in a water based poly purpleheart wood 10 coat's and buffed on a machine.

This one is Spanish cedar done in tung oil rubbed out 8 time's and buffed on a machine. A nice finish can be done with out to much work, and wont smell to bad when you apply it.

Ok for those of you who are thinking of using lacquer you can use the one in a can with a foam brush apply it, sand, apply again. I did this drum 7 time's, & wet sanded it and buffed in a a machine. Lacquer finishes are great but the fume's are bad for you & can ignite so be carefull. This is a Carpathian elm burl venner.

You know what you doing, them drums look
real nice. Last year I refinished some of my
congas and bongos drums and I used different
finishes (lacquer, shellac, poly plus dyes and
toners) the whole process took me close to 8
month and I learned a lot. As soon as it gets
warms around here I am ready to refinish
a couple of drums I kind rushed last fall when
it got cold around here..

I have been to Moca and San Sebastian too.
You can eat good local food just about
everywhere in P.R.. Take Care Boricua!

I'm Cuban and we are known for awesome lechon, but the best lechon I ever had was in the hills of Trujillo Alto outside of San Juan, out of of truck that sat accros from a laguna (a lake) up in those hills. The skin was very crispy and the meat was sooooo tender. I added pasteles and arroz con gandules y una "cervezona bien fria". Cholesterol paradise!

You obviously don't need any help in the finishing!
Beautiful work! ...and beautiful, interesting and varied hardware!

I am assuming that all the shells are veneered.
Do you do the veneer work?

I've got a bunch of purpleheart I'm trying to figure out what to do with.
Purpleheart is really hard and tough on tools.

Are you building your congas or refinishing?
It would be cool to refinish a serviceable but battered old conga with new veneer.

Joseph :I trust the opinion's on this site.I just wanted your guy though's on conga finish'es since there Junior conga's i didnt want to screw up the drum and not like the finish. The purpleheart drum is a segmented shell (made with block's of wood) from The global drum company. Yes i do veneer but i use the glue hot iron method. To do a conga might be hard because of the shape. You would have to cut small strip's on a angle. Would be nice to make a conga out of purpleheart, Maybe you can make clave's with that wood. I think im going to do the finish like you did that drum look's sweet!
