Junior conga buff out natural wood finish,. I was thinking of using those Lp rubber bumper's for the lug's so they won't scratch the other drum you guy's think they will fit? Any other ideal's. Thank's

I would actually look into Meinl bumpers for that drum.

I love Junior Tirado drums My friend Ray got his for $150.00 from Jr himself back in the day, I have one from his very early days of drum making. Check out my post under Open Discussion Conga Shell Protectors just an idea that doesn't cost alot and does not detract from the esthetic of the drum. But best of all protects your drum. Que viva la Rumba.

Here is a pair of 1968 Junior Tirado that I bought off Ebay and had them restored by Matthew Smith. The pawnshop that had them in Brooklyn thought they were Mexican congas. Before and after pictures.

If you choose to use the LP Conga Shell Protectors (I've used them on practically all of my drums), you can determine which size to use by the diameter of the tension rods. The average mass produced conga will normally use the regular LP ProCare Conga Shell Protectors Black 6 pcs - LP628, whereas the special made conga drums, or drums with larger sized tension rods might use the LP Galaxy Procare Conga Shell Protectors Chrome 6 pcs - LP628G-C.

I use them because they're practically inconspicuous on the drum. What I mean is that they don't take away from the beautiful chrome hardware of the drum, my personal preference.

Of course there are other conga shell protectors, Meinl, Gon Bops, Volcano, etc, that work well at protecting the conga shell and are every bit as worth buying also. Also, as Abure Docarroyo refers to in his post, there are other solutions that are yet even less costly, the do-it-yourself method which is also very effective at protecting your congas.

Gon Bops still carry their big shell protectors. They're just no longer standard on their congas, particularly their California Series.

Except for my early 2007-model conga, I had to special order their shell protectors for my late 2007-model quinto, conga and tumba (at $24 per set of 6 or $4 per piece). My local Gon Bops dealer told me that because DW believed that the early release of the California series tumbadoras were significantly underpriced (at about $600 a pop), they stopped including their shell protectors as a standard feature on their late 2007 releases.

Surprisingly, DW continued to do the same even after they had almost doubled the price for their 2008 California Series tumbadoras to more than $1,000 a pop. Thus, you no longer see the shell protectors on the California Series tumbadoras on their website or in their 2008 catalog.

Thank's guy's i can alway's count this site for information. Omelenko1 so those are your congas that i saw on Matthew's site. That;s a great find. I have 2 skin's that i brought from him for the conga & tumba that i will put on.
