Welcome Bongonene! You have just discovered a very cool place to discuss/share the beautiful art of playing all forms of percussion, especially los tambores. What part of the Bronx are you from? I'm a native Bronx Bomber myself, born and raised in the boogie down, currently living in the Pelham Bay area.

Welcome! I hope you find this site useful! There are some great players and quick learners here!

Abukua, I have a recommendation that we have a thread devoted to new people saying hello, and where the new member can say a little bit about themselves.
Do we have one already and I'm missing it?

Thanks,
Dave

Wazzup fellas! I am originally from the Soundview, Story Ave, Noble Ave, in the Bronx. (Soundview is pretty long). I am in Upstate New York now, Plattekill Area. Where the "Villas" are. (Were!) We have a good amount of Latinos in this area, but I am having the most difficult time trying to start a band, or even join one. There is not a lot of musicians up in this area that I know, unless they are all hiding! I play Congas (HandZon by Cannon), Bongo (LP Matadors, upgraded skins) and I actually built Timbales from old metallic snare shells. I am looking forward to chatting with you guys. I have been reading some of these threads, and there is a whole lot of info that I have applied so far. I am thinking about starting a thread on small percussion; maracas, guiro and campana. I see a lot of importance in these instruments, I also think they are kind of neglected.

I am working now mostly on Bongo, that is my first love. I try to stay fresh on Conga and Timbal. I tend to stay with the "Afinque" style of playing, Old Skool" I believe in "playing with conversation" as I have seen on these posts.

I also have a MySpace page, (Jay-Bone), I will try and post a link when I figure it out.

All right fellas, will see you on here, and keep hitting the skins.

I fit into my group mainly as a the shekere player. Of course we play all the parts and sing on some,, but you kind of find your niche based on what others do best. So, I do a lot with shekere just by default. But, you remind me once again, I should practice it regularly.. It all adds up!
Just recently have been able to sustain the lead and second position parts to Iyesa on Guiros for at least 5 minutes or so.. That is definitely no small feat,,, but there's so much further to go!! Gotta keep practicing!! So, I'm definitely up for some discussion on the small stuff! :D
