Hi,

i live in Portugal and i've been deal with Tom Alex. from vulcano a new set of congas. They look and sound quit impressive..(Tom sent me some mp3). The final issue about the set is always the transportation costs and duties but we will make it happen.
I own a set of Islas, i think they are good sounding congas but since the beginning that i am hearing some noises around the congas, a lot of people try the congas and they feel the same, even guys that play with G. Hidalgo found the sound warm but doesn't expand and have so noises. I think the problem is the skins but here in Portugal the skins are hard to find.
My question is, a vulcano set based on a boomba, tumba and conga is too ridiculous? can it be heard in a loud band?

keep in touch

Hello maximiano,

The Volcano Percussion drums are actually louder than fiberglass but without the ring. If the band is super loud you will probably have to mic them but otherwise the drums have a wonderful projection and will be loud enough. The heads are top quality. The Conga Tumba and Boomba are a great choice. You will love your Volcano Percussion Drums. Thomas Alexander is a Fantastic builder.

Enjoy!

Volcanoes have plenty of volume there is someone in my class that has a set. He has a fibreskyn head
on the one he brings to class.
The fibreskyn is not my favorite sound, but it is not a bad sound. I like real skins. It's a very nice drum though, very different
from Isla drums. The Volcano drum might be what your looking for. Brighter and louder, but a much nicer sound than
fiberglass or anything like that.

The owner used to live in Hawaii, so I think the fibreskyn was useful for the island, it's very hot and humid there.

I own a Boomba and it is an incredible drum. It is loud and depending on the skin, it can sound quite impressive. When I first got the drum, it came with a great skin (Texas Bullhide) but unfortunately it was too thin for the 14" drum. I couldn't find a solid tone and had overtones. So I went ahead and ordered a ridiculously thicker Texas Bullhide ( I asked for thickest they can get) and now the drum is ridiculous. I play with a 10-piece funk-fusion band and it is more than enough in that scenario (when I decide to play with it!) It cost me a lot of money and to bring it to ALL the gigs I have, I am sure I would manage to put some damage on the shell with the other drums etc. So I leave it at home and use it for studio work.
But if you are looking for a projecting drum, Volcanoes are built solid and they can give you what you need.

peace

Gallichio,

When you say "custom", what size are they? Most Volcanos are 32" tall right?

Very nice set you have there....

I have a Alternate Stave Boomba at home. They're solid monsters. Tom is a very good builder and person.

Hey Mike G - I see you installed the LP shell protectors on your congas.
They look much better than the Remo protectors.

I had an opportunity to play a set of Volcanos congas a few weeks ago.
The Volcanos looked great & had a decent sound but IMO the LP Matadors at this jam sounded better.
The Matadors had some fantastic mule skins.
