Wooden or Fiberglass-which set should I get?

Hello: I am new, just started lessons yesterday and would like to purchase a set for my son and myself. I know LP is a standard, good quality brand which is what we use in class. I'm wondering out of these two at these two prices which would you suggest I purchase? Both are used obviously. Thanks for your help, Ryan

LP Aspire Wood Conga set w/stand (10", 11") - Excellent Shape, Couple of minor scuffs - $240

Verve Fiberglass Conga Set w/stand (10", 11") - Used, but in good shape - $115

Don't get the Aspires. They are called Aspires because as soon as you get them
you aspire to get a different set of drums. Truly an unfortunate line of drums.

none of those drums are good, not even for beginners. the hardware is weak, too weak for better skins. 10" is about requinto size, too small for normal hands to learn the technics properly.
better look for used matadors, sized 11" and 11 3/4", or 11,75" and 12,5". good drums .
there are other manufacturers, meinl, pearl, remo, sonor, toca, tycoon, bauer ...just to name some of the bigger players.

do not buy drums with hooks less than 5/16" or 8mm diameter.

edit: to answar your title question: i recommend wooden drums. better look, better sound, better price.

If you do get aspires you'll need to put on new heads. I had a friend who bought 2 used aspires then pule mule skins on them. best sounding aspires i ever played!

I just order an LP natural wood aspire 11' 11 3/4" and 12" set trying to avoid the tiny 10" drum. But after hearing from some here I hope I'm not going to be upset with the LP series. best success!

I would just keep looking for good used ones, you can get some great deals on older classics and matadors and if anything I think the older ones are better. Who cares if they are the same color etc, go for sound and potential, the classics I started out with sounded lovely with nice skins on them.

Contrary to what many are saying in this thread the LP Aspires are really just fine for a beginner - especially a beginner with a limited budget.

I actually still own a pair of wooden Aspires and I use them for certain rehearsals and even in some gigs (I also have a set of old fibreglass LP Classics, 3 old Gon Bops and 3 new Giovanni Palladiums).

When I was studying in Cuba I met players who were able to get incredible sounds out of ancient and battered drums with slack and almost broken skins.

It doesn't really matter that much what drums you play as a beginner – just get playing.
If you get into it the world of conga playing you'll have something to upgrade to later as your skills develop.

This makes me feel better. I am also one on a limited budget. I will get a set of LP classics in the next 3 years or so.
But for now slap the Aspire 3pc set. Thanks for the reality check pavloconga.

This is true what pavloconga said.
When you are lerning how to play on drums, you want to get good sound out of it. If you have poor drums you have to work more to achieve good sound and then when changing set for better quality you says WOW how incredible it sounds! But it is compilation of good technique and good drums and technique is most important in this. If you have good drums you can get aceptable sound faster, but when get poor drum you can see that you can't play properly.
