Paying tribute to Manny Oquendo, one of the best timbaleros of all times.

Heres a short clip from Sunday nights gig, friend of mine got married.
I jumped off congas to let my bro Tonio (Jose) take a solo, (Jose plays timbal in my band) Dom jumped up onto timbal to fill in during this track, I shot it with my crappy mobile phone camera, sorry for bad image quality.

Hey Tonio's got some really nice tightly controlled licks! That's the kind of thing someone like myself could study and maybe woodshed up to get it in the "bag of tricks" category. The camera's video function has surprisingly good audio!

Here is a clip of Pedro Martinez and Mauricio Herrera playing the longest break in clave that I have ever heard. Pedro keeps the clave all the way through with his foot, so it is undeniable that they are in clave. The break starts at 4:20 in the clip and lasts over 2 minutes. They play in unison for the whole time, so you can't argue that they don't know what they are playing. These guys are so good, and the break is so complex, I can't even pretend that I can follow the clave all the way through, but the clave is there and it doesn't move. At one point they play a clave cruzada (on purpose and in unison) against the clave Pedro is keeping. Pedro is widely recognized as having the best internal "clock" among the top bata players in NYC, and I have seen him sing Akpwon while playing itotele with all the calls, and at other times sing Akpwon while playing Iya with all the calls and floreos. This is not that uncommon in Cuba, but rare outside of Cuba. Also, I am pretty sure Mauricio is right handed, and his drums are set up mirror image to Pedro's.
Can anyone follow the whole break and hear how everything fits with the clave all the way through?

I definitely missed it, mostly because the topic of this thread is way too broad for me to check it all the time. I never understood why all videos needed their own thread. If there had been a thread called "Pedrito Martinez is friggin' awesome!" I probably would have seen it. :D

Actually, no I didn't see your post until just now when I went back through the last few pages of this thread. Looking at your post, those 3 clips are an interesting contrast. The first one is a solo and it is hard or impossible to hear the clave in most parts of it. The amazing technical skills aside, some people would say it sounded just like very high level fooling around but with no rhythm to it and no clave. The second one is a song, with obvious clave that is there but not played. On the third one Pedro is playing clave through the whole thing and I still find it hard or impossible to play clave while listening to the drums in the break, unless I keep coming back to listen to Pedro's clave to keep me on time. They do stuff like displace a guaguanco pattern 5 beats later and displace a clave 4 beats later while still playing a straight clave at the same time. By the way, it looks from other videos like Mauricio plays left handed, so the mirror image setup is 2% less amazing than if he were right handed. Either way, Mauricio is a monster too.

windhorse I'm with you. Pedrito is my favorite now, also. That video with Mauricio Herrera, is some incredible playing on thier part, however; as impressed I am with his playing, I think I'm more impressed with his singing. These videos are a good example of pedrito's command of the voice. This tribute to Puntilla must have been a moving occasion.

Would anyone else be into the idea of a video 'section' rather than thread ? Each video of interest could have it's own heading and resulting conversation thread, all i ever do with this method is catch the last one or two that have been added, does anyone really go back through 66 pages to look for posted items ? I know there is a wealth of amazing footage contained in there but it's just getting lost in my opinion.

Just a thought,

I agree on a Video Section with ability to differentiate threads.
