Hi Congaplace,

Here are some photos of my Slingerland Congas that I have decided to restore. I have taken all the hardware off. I need to polish the chrome. I have fixed the fiberglass shells with a fiberglass filler. I have sanded the shells smooth. I have to tape up the bottoms and then they will be ready for the painter. I was thinking White with metal flake or white pearl. I will keep everyone posted on this project. Enjoy the photos.

Here is the hardware. I need to polish most of it. I want to restore them because they are nice and light and sound wonderful.

I like the shells. They look like great barrels.

can't wait to see the finished product.

They sound really nice and are light weight. I will bring them to the painter Monday. I am leaning to a high gloss pearl white for the color. I will post as soon as the painter is done with them.

Great !!! :D :D
Please, can you talk about the paint, products, how to work... if it's possible of course, if the painter is ok to explain you. I'm curious about how to paint fiberglass !!!

As far as I have read, the best way to finish a fiberglass surface is to use either polyurethane lacquer or a two component epoxy lacquer.
These two will produce the most durable finish, although other finishes will be also OK. But I am no self-acclaimed expert concerning fiberglass.

I also have no idea on the best way to paint fiberglass. I will talk to the painter and see if he has anything he could tell us.

Just as if painting a car, laquer based products for best results, also they have some new acrylic based products that are very good also. And there are some clear finishes that have teflon in them, which makes them very resistant to scratching and chipping.

The congas are in the painters hands. I picked a high gloss pearl white with fine silver flake. The painter said it would be a base coat then the pearl coat then clear with silver flake. He also said he would seal the congas before he paints them. This painter does some of the hot rods in the neighborhood and is a expert body man and painter. I sanded by hand for over 4 hours. He said he would sand them more and seal them then do the three part paint job on them. They should look very nice when I get them back. Now I must find the time to clean up the chrome. I will post photos of the shells as soon as I get them back.

Hello Congaplace,

Here are two photos of my Slingerland restoration Project. I just picked the drums up from the painter and they came out really nice. Better than I thought they would. I have to do more polishing on the chrome. I will keep Congaplace posted when I get the hardware back on the drums.

Enjoy the photos
Mike

Here they are on my deck in more light. In the light you can't really see the pearl or silver flake very well they change to a very bright white. I think they will look great under stage lighting. Today in Chicago it is a very overcast cloudy sky.

Enjoy
Mike

I have installed the chrome bottoms, chrome rings and the name plates. I want to polish the side plates and rims again before I mount them. Hope to be done this week.
