One of the all-time greatest percussionists of all time... an all-around master of all percussion and all styles.
Having heard him play and sing rumba in-person - this guy is truly a master.
He's played/recorded/toured with the biggest names and projects over 3 decades.
Don't miss his solo at the end.

epicous, That's a nice band. So many good bands I haven't heard of. As for the conguero He appears to be a lefty. His technique is certainly not the popular contemporary style used today or even of that era I'm assuming the 60's or so, however; his sound is classic, and certainly top notch. Ive seen a few left handed drummers, who's technique looks similar, they are not the caliber of this drummer, but the hand position and movement looks very similar, which makes me wonder if its a lefty thing.

Hi Quinto. Actually this video is from 1975. The conguero is venezuelan Pedro Guapacha.

Nice demonstration Johnny. I may have asked this or expressed a similar sentiment in a prior thread, but with ask it again anyway. I know Guarapachangeo is a busy rhythm, however; in an ensemble setting would one play so many strokes? Another question is in what other context would you play in this manner. Do you ever use in a band setting? Thanks!

Thank you QG No i have not YET! used Guarapachangeo in a band or jam situation (as there is nobody where i live that can even play rumba for more than 10 minutes let alone play Guarapachangeo.) But i might give it a shot on my next CD...I was busy with it for purely improvisation... it can be played and applied depending on the arrangement i would say, and if you can work it in... it is to me one of those patterns that can be expanded to do different things within the pattern... Viscaino also plays it differently than Panga plays it.... so u can approach the pattern many ways, as long as u end on the last 2 beats of the clave. "JC" Johnny Conga....ps u can pick up my new CD at http://cdbaby.com/cd/congajohnny :D

Here is a short clip of my band, taken from saturday nights gig at Afro Cuban Sessions Live @ "The Basement."
In the clip we are performing Marc Anthony's classic bolero/cha cha cha, "Hasta Ayer".
We slow it down mid set to give the band & the dancers a break.

My bata reacher Thom is showing how the floreo to ChachaLokefun goes on Okonkolo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McRbWns2MaI

He, Jeff, myself and my main teacher, Dave are playing tonight and I'm excited again to do some focused bata study!

My friend, and teacher - Jeff and his band "Skinfonia". check out the quinto closest to the mic towards the end when they switch into Chachalokefun! He plays a mean floreo,, then easily drops back into Kila.. Also, the check out that amazing Coro!!! Wow!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBvERYNSvH0

Here's Jeff demonstrating how the floreo is done on quinto as a ride..

His version of the "regular" quinto ride:

Another quinto ride:

Me singing to Oya & clapping bell:

I'm still working on the vocal qualities which are by no means even close to how I'd like them.. that's why it's set to private.

Sorry guys, Youtube says that a Private video can be seen 25 times, but they don't mention that the viewer must already be marked as a "friend" in your settings to see them.. I went ahead and made them public.. This will be the only place that they get shown, so I'm sure it'll be Okay anyway.

Here is another short clip from same gig with my band as the vid below, my bro "Tonio" takes a Timbal solo during 'Por Encima del Nivel / Sandunguera'
Notice the huge snare? Its a vintage marching snare he restored and brought back to life!
Enjoy the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruh2xJuKhJA
