Congamyk,

Didn't you hear his Guaguanco-esque rudiment?

Just curious,

Right on, JC. Anybody conguero (good or bad) that's got that number of bookings deserves some respect.

Right on! Could others (Remo, Toca, Gibraltar, WAR, Malo, etc.) being seeing in Marcos Reyes what some of us don't see in him?

In this business called music "attitude" is a major part of the work...Postive attitudes will get u work ...it will garner "friends and connections"...and most of the time in this business its not "what u know, but who you know" as well..."JC:" Johnny Conga

Manny, Ive answered you in PM. :)

Guys, lets not misinterpret what I meant when I wrote my comment. It was merely an observation I made on his technique and timing based on that video. No malice or offence was implied or intended. Based purely off that video, there is no doubting his technique is sloppy and timing was off/shakey.

Regarding the dates topic, I actually average approx 3-4 well paid gigs per week, resulting in approx 156 (@ 3 per week) to 208 (@ 4 per week) dates per year. Obviously this varies with cancellations and multiple bookings on same date.
Just to make things clear....

There's a lot of us "typical white-boy-shuffle-conga-rock-thing...drummer wannabes" around  :D. You're, right. It ain't Cuban/Brazilian/folkloric/traditional rumba, but we do the best we can.... I do love your way of classifying us. No, I mean it. :D

I know a lot of guys that play that way. That's why I came up for the name for it.
The term is not meant to classify someone that's in the process of "LEARNING" as you and others may be.
I use the term towards people that have been playing for many years. Those people have seen & heard the tradition & technique for a long time yet never properly play with the technique, timing and sound that comes from learning the rudiments and all of the rhythms.

I made my comments based on this information - from his website I presume - and the video itself.
I didn't hear anything Cuban or Brazilian.

I agree with umannyt. For that style, his Guaguanco-esgue/New York Mozambique-esgue rhythm sounded par for the course to me. Does Santanas' percussionist play much different? Of course he's no Gio, but is he that bad? At least he didn't cross the clave, or did he? :>)

Congamyk,

Don't get me wrong. This "typical white-boy-shuffle-conga-rock-thing...drummer wannabe" isn't at all offended by your comments. I've got tougher skin than that, and frankly --- truth be told-- it's an accurate (and funny) assessment of guys like us. I'm guessing (and it seems, from your experience) there's a lot of us out there who, though playing for years, don't learn "the rhythms", but instead make up our own or modify "the rhythms" to fit whatever gig/music is available in our market. Can we call ourselves "congueros"? Probably not. "wannabes?" Yeah, I guess so, and therefore find ourselves placed quite, quite low on the percussive totem pole, getting little or no respect from "TRUE" congueros. Nonetheless, It's all good, brother. We try to take as much pride in what we do with what we've got as anybody else.

Hi CT, in a way we are all "wannabees" in that we want to improve our playing, our abilities, our imporvisation, etc.

So I always wannabe better... dig?

Alafia Abures!
I hope that you are all well and abundantly blessed!

Here is a copy of segments of the percussion clinic performed by David "la Mole" Ortiz on July 18th, 2009.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQRXZ6ZwYa4

Afterwards the man invited several of those present over to my house to give private lessons (for a quite reasonable fee).
He's seen here using 3 of my California Gon Bops, and the 1 drum I had ordered from Isaac (JCR Percussion), however it was finished by Matthew Smith.

Chevere!

Thanks Abure Tonio!
Yes, the skin on the conga (it's actually a 12.5" tumbadora, the other two are 13.25", and the blonde one in front is 13"). I actually placed new skins on the GBs when I originally got them, I placed some skins on them from Moperc. The one on the main ride (12.50") is actually a mule skin. About 3 weeks ago, I had heard this loud "Rip!" and when I checked, I had forgotten to loosen it, and so the skin ripped. I replaced it with a mule that I had saved up.

They actually sound great!

We all had a great time out here with "la Mole" while he was here. I've actually spoken with him several times since then, he's called me from Puerto Rico.

Hope all is well my brother!
