My New Old Gon Bops Bongos show me yours

Postby docarroyo » Sat Aug 29, 2009 9:39 pm

I picked these up recently they are walnut. Hembra is 9 inches, Macho 7 inches, resonance and projection are incredible I plan on changing the macho to a mule as soon as I can get up to see Cali or may try L&H skins. I have only seen two other sets here but I hope some others will be posted soon.

Wow! Beautiful bongos! Wish I had a set to show you but-----. I'm sure they sound great. Right now my favorite bongos are the walnut set I got from you. Something very special about that wood. How do you like that 9" hembra?

Yo Bro hows it going, I hope your enjoying those old LP's they are sweet sounding drums. The 9 gives me a larger fuller sound almost Cajon in sound which I like. The skins are done on both heads so I'm looking foward to mounting new skins and then taking them out for a test drive. I find that the correct skin on the right drum is the most important factor to sound. Take care and thanks for the compliment on my drums.

The GB walnut bongos are great, they definately have that "pop" in the macho that I love.

The ones that Vinnie is talking about are my 1950's vintage Gon Bops. These have an incredible pop to them, amaizing sound and very light.
Here are photos of them.

Good Looking skins Doc, just need to lube that Hembra with Manteca de Corojo to stain the skin to a uniform color and you be ready to go. The last manteca I got from the Botanica is really liquid and stained the skin to an overall tan color. Glad you are satisfy with your Gon Bop and with L & H percussion. I am planning to place an order by the 15 of October, I need some mules for the Macho.

OK I know the thread is New Old Gon Bops but I just picked up a set of New New Gon Bops today, they have incredible "pop" to them .
I'm curious about the heads. The website didn't seem to have any info on the drum. The metal collar makes me think it might be a synthetic head like a Remo-fiberskyn.I also thought maybe the band is just a cover for the ring. These sound so good I hate to take them apart to see.

Definitely a synthetic head. My Gon Bops quinto had the a similar
kind of head - Made for Gon Bops by Remo.
The metal band is the ring for the plastic head, which is integrated right into
it. It is not a cover for any kind of ring. I had to buy a new ring when I switched
the had to skin.
