Congatick/Seisporocho1,
Thank you both for your kind words. I appreciate the feedback. And yes, Little Johnny is not just a great performer and teacher but, he's also one heck of a nice guy of which I'm very proud to call my friend & maestro. Thanks again!

Only three years??!!?!?
Great form, really flat hands, nice crisp slaps.. fairly relaxed shoulders.. Dude, you're doing great!

Now, you just need a little more separation in the tone of the lowest and second drums..

afrocubarico wrote:Hey folks,
Below are links to two videos I just posted on YouTube for the first time. I've only been playing for slightly over 3 years now ( I started late in life, I'm 40) and still have a lot to learn. I am posting these here to get some critique from you veterans. These are just practice shots in my bedroom, no fancy set ups or camera work. I welcome all comments/critique. Thank you.

Windhorse,
Thanks for the feedback my brother. When you say "separation", do you mean that I should tune the segundo a bit higher or are you suggesting that I space the notes apart a bit more? Thanks again.

I'm also not an expert and been playing less time than you but I too think you are doing great man. Like others said for 3 years you are doing excellent. I know its hard work but I can see its paying off. Sigue mi hermano que vas en buen camino.

Again, your technique is great!
I mean the tuning.. it's a personal taste thing, and whether there are two, three, or four drums playing there are various possible tunings.. But most of the folkloric stuff at least has drums tuned in fourths, not thirds.. I think if you go about one whole note down on your tumba then you should be close.. In Do ray me fah so la tee doh, fourths would be do - fa,, a nemonic would be "here comes the bride"
In the end it's a personal choice.
And I'm no veteran either.. Just 10 or 11 years started late in life too.

Baya Windhorse,
Understood mi hermano. Thanks again for the great feedback.

On a different note, check out the video below. This is a video that Isla Percussion put out to promote their drums some time ago. I'm sure most of you have seen this. Check out the clip at 11:28 to 11:35. Anyone know what is this beat/pattern? It sounds awesome! This whole video is fantastic.

Tumbadora47,
Very nice! Just like Lightseeker stated, great hand independence. Your drums sound really good, very well tuned. Thanks for sharing this video with us.

Here is my friend's padrino and teacher killing it on a duet.

Notice all the bata feels he takes advantage of in his playing. I absolutely love his style.
