Caballoballo,
thanks very much for the details! Seems to be great hardwood indeed!
I am really looking forward for the bongó to arrive.

Psych1,
thanks as well. I also have got a Meinl stand which works quite good with center blcoks like those.

Anyway I will keep you posted for sure.

Hey, I got the bongó alright, a fantastic deal as well for about 120€. :D
The seller did not mention some cracks in the hembra and was fair enough to
reduce the price. Now I have mended the cracks, Titebond III is still drying, I applied it
with a syringe and strapped it tight, they should be closed and alright.

All in all, the hardware is really outstanding and very heavy.

So far, I am a happy camper.
The macho skin is really a bit too thick for my taste, perhaps I will change it later.
There are one or two hairline cracks in the macho shell, hard to figure out whether they will develop into fissures that cause trouble.
Is there anything I can do about that?

Mike geschieht, Hair cracks, I would not bother until really time to repair. Yes,Colombians always put a too thick skin on the Machos so probably the hair crack were cause by that skin. If you are going to really crank it up then it is better to change the skin thus preventing the cracks to develope into a must repair situation.

Psych1, I got a phone call from 3A percussion and he should be here tomorrow,he is going to bring me some lugs to replace the one on my old El Piernas. The ones I am replacing have no failure, If you are interested I could ship them to your friends in the U.S. Sent me a PM for the deal.

Caballoballo, thanks for the fast reply.
I forgot to mention that the bongó is 10 years old, and the cracks
in the hembra might also have happened because the skins were not detuned
at all! The bongó arrived with a ridiculously high pitch, the hembra skin being as
high as a macho!
But the repair is done, and it is a very fine instrument.

BTW, to be not too off-topic, the lugs are among the heaviest and thus sturdiest I have
ever seen on bongos. Man, Hector Roche knows something about solid construction indeed.

Mike - You are going to love that bongo! Everything about that bongo is thick and heavy but they sound great! But, El Piernas bongos do develop cracks - usually just between the staves so it is an easy fix. I don't know if it is the glue HR uses or because the very special wood wood reacts to all the temperature changes. Florida and PR guys don't have the weather extremes we have so their experience may be different. Mine has a funny construction, I posted pictures in this thread - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4847&start=15 - so it stays closed even though the staves separated.

CB - Yes - I want the lugs - super - I only need 4 but I'll take them all unless someone else here wants some. If you have an HR bongo it is a good idea to have a backup lug. Sending you a PM now.

Vaya Mike, glad that the repair is made to a perfect finish. Also I do not know why some people ( as you mentioned the Bongo arrived with a very high pitch on both shells ) tune the Bongos that way and leave them tune,it make no sense, even when I used sinthetics in the pass detunning was a must. Otherwise that continuous tension will crack the wood. 10 years old is vintage.

Psych1, alright.
