How many bongos do you own?

Postby bongosnotbombs » Mon Dec 21, 2009 5:25 pm

We Have this poll for congas, let's do one for bongos. How many bongos do you own?
Include bongos that are in playing condition, project bongos you are working on, and collectible
bongos you keep in a safe place and only take out every now and then.

I have two bongos right now. A vintage Valje bongo and a Resolution bongo. I've had others but this is my current collection. Both of these are regular players.

Nice thread idea!

I own 3 - or rather 2 and a half,
because my vintage HR El Piernas has not seen new skins yet,
so it is my current project, but the crack in the hembra shell has
been mended at least.

I am really curious what this heavy beast (incredible hardware) will sound like with
the L&H skins Mike has sent me (calf for macho and mule for hembra), as
they are still in the mail. Hopefully this project will be finished around Christmas.

The LP Palisades Park mahogany bongó kept me busy this summer,
but it was worth the effort, and it yields insane slaps :D
I do take great care of it though, it might qualify as a collector´s item
even though it is still a played instrument.

My third set is the somewhat featherweight Supercussion bongó
which I keep as a banger for more silent settings - but not for
silent night, holy night...

Even if they are inferior in regard to hardware and construction,
it is a nice instrument. I often use it on a sit-down stand in an
eclectic setting with two congas and cajon.

10 right now. Divided between 2 residences and 1 hideout.

2 PP LPs. One in walnut the other mahogany. Both with thin and thick cow. These are the ones I play most.

1 old, 30 years?, Meinl in German oak that I keep goat skin on. I used to play it a lot but not much now. I'll pass this one on to a promising someone someday.

1 super Meinl Special Woodcraft Free-Ride with 9" hembra, stock buffalo "True-Skin" heads, and trad rims that I mount on a super heavy Meinl stand. This one usually lives in the trunk of my car waiting for gigs or parties. Reliable and indestructible work-horse.

1 great old El Piernas in "Holy Wood" Taken apart, in pieces, a project.

1 Toca project that I will never get to - probably will give this one away

1 set of LP "Juniors" if they count. When I play them, rarely, I play them more like big bongos than congas.

1 LP "Dandy" that I got a deal on. I don't play it. Sounds OK but for some reason I just don't like the fancy finish. I'm thinking about stripping it or selling it.

1 Cuban classic. Made in the 1930's of one piece walnut, 18 cm tall. Belonged to Sexteto Nacional. Modified and abused over the years with drilled holes for cheap hardware and lots of cracks. Someday it may go to someone like Cali or Matt but it's my project for now. Thinking about gluing thin mahogany on the tops as a temporary cajon until I decide how best to deal with this one. It should have been left as a tack-head.

1 Junior Tirado with mule and cow that I am just "caretaking" until the person comes along that really should have it. I don't know whether to pass it on to a great player or sell it to a rich collector. It's well protected in a good case and I take it out, crank it up, and play it once in a while just to keep it alive. But, I don't feel like it's really mine. The Meinls and the PP LPs are mine for sure.

Traveling now, pictures later.

I have three sets, a poplar stave shelled set of jcr's, a set of timbas and my early set which are meinl's, the meinls actually have good sound but I never play them anymore after getting used to playing set with the hardware adjusted to make them comfortable on my legs.

I got 6, all playable but # 6 is in the process of new hardware so the picture has to wait.

Saludos and Merry Christmas to all.

Negative BNB, That is a Colombian Percussion Model, one solid piece. Painted by a friend with the Mitsubishi Eclipse color which changes depending on the light intensity. That one is for sale, if anybody interested send me a reasonable offert and then we could talk. It is playeable with thick cow skin on the Hembra and a thin one on the Macho, very easy to get a clean slap from the macho and a nice mellow tone from the Hembra. It is my choice for tomorrow night gig. Hasta la vista
